Why I believe cigarettes should be taxed $10.00 a pack and that money should be used to subsidize the cost of healthcare

HERE'S WHAT I THINK
Why I believe cigarettes should be taxed $10.00 a pack and that money should be used to subsidize the cost of health care
Each year, health care taxes continue to increase along with the cost for treating tobacco- related diseases. Non smokers end up footing part of their bills with these increased insurance premiums. According to the American Cancer Society, "for each pack of cigarettes sold or given away in 2004, $5.50 was spent on medical care caused by smoking, and $5.32 lost in productivity, for a total cost to society of $10.82 per pack." More important than the cost in dollars, is the cost of lives caused by smoking. About half of the people who smoke continually will die because of it. Their loved ones are affected the most when a smoker dies from something they could have prevented. I could not imagine having to tell one of my children I was dying from something I could have prevented.
The younger a person is when he or she begins to smoke, the more likely he or she is to become addicted to nicotine. Almost 90% of adult smokers first smoked at or before age 19. If we create a high tax on each cigarette pack, the majority of these kids would never start or continue to induce in a health-threatening habit; the costs would be unaffordable. I would also hope many adults would quit or cut down because of the expense, living longer, healthier lives. My wife's mother and father were both smokers that died of emphysema.
My father, also a smoker, was diagnosed with lung cancer two years ago. I have seen too many people in my life dying from cancer. Even if you don't agree with me about taxing cigarettes, I hope I am able to inspire someone to quit smoking.

Yes, you're right!

You think big conglomerates of the tobacco industry can EVER become sane? They can't. I don't not who but someone from the industry spread the news that cigarette help to control weight, ever since so many people especially women just to it to lose weight.

I'm not sure if that will work on the teenagers, but I am willing to give it a shot. Raise the cigarette tax. It'll do a lot of people a benefit to changing their old habits to a more
healthy lifestyle.

Alcohol kills even more but you won't see them tripling taxes on that.....All the drunks running this country would have to pay their share then !!!!!
kimark421 says:
I agree. Why should we subsidize slow suicide? Yep, tax 'em at least $10 pack. Great lens. 5*s.
ifish2 says:
I have been a nonsmoker for just over a year-quitting was best thing I ever did. Chest pains was my wake up call. I agree with you about what you said- about having to tell your family. My family was my motivation the moment I thought I was going to die from a heart attach. I'm just not sure if I totally agree with you about the 10 dollars; I think the government would find other ways to spend it.
No way, Monkeybrain!
PestyOne says:
You could tax it to the moon if you like, but guess what? there are still gonna be ALOT of smokers.....take a guess why, It's called addiction.
Yes there are those that do seem to over come this addiction, but there are just as many if not more that smoke til their dieing day, and you think we haven't wish many times to be able to quit?
People make me mad always saying stuff like "We none smokers have to flip the bill for those that smoke with higher health care costs" Really? and what?....the money that we pay goes for what?????
Another thing that gets me...... the Government seems to love to throw out there every time more tax is added to a pack of cigarettes "we have to hide them from underage kids, keep them out of sight" BULL, our Government has our children's best interest at hart? No that's not it at all, nor is it Health care cost, or anyone's best interest but their own at hart.
If they really cared they could just outlaw Cigarettes all together, it can be done, been done before with booze.
So before you belittle your fellow man for an addiction they wish they could quit themselves, or tax them for having that addiction, their might come a time when something you have an addiction to might come under attack.

How about $10 tax on every Big Mac, KFC, Burger King, Starbucks and how many more can I name, purchase because healthcare is costing more for heart attack, stroke, high cholesterol and obesity and overweight health related factors and I do not eat any of the above so why am I paying for the huge cost of healthcare for all of those problems.
Allyda says:
You will only further hurt we poor people like me. I'm very disabled and suffering from several chronic health problems. None of which are related to my smoking, that are going to end my life soon enough. I get disability out of which after my bills are paid I'm left with only $40.00 per month. All you 'extra charge' & 'tax' people never think before you write about just who you'd actually be hurting. Yes I'd love to quit but I've tried & tried & tried. I'm stuck in my bed most of the time though due to my health. Well, here's my take on the subject: I hope my health problems kill me before your $10.00 tax ever sees the light of day!
Melanie says:
A ten dollar tax on cigarettes, is absurd. If you did that you would have to tax bacon, and fast food cheesburgers for making people fat and giving people high cholesterol and heart attacks. I know the IDEA of taxing things that are bad for you is I"N THEORY" a good idea. But with so many things being bad for a person, targeting just one is unfair, and targeting them all is impossible. A person has to make their own decisions about their own body and life. Government should stay out of it.
larry says:
So we should tax drivers for all the medical bills piled up from accidents from minor to serious?
mazbond says:
I disagree, they tax cigerattes loads already, if everyone stopped smoking just think of all the tax revenue they would lose. They should put more tax an alcohol
Dawgoneit says:
Although I only smoke 1 pack a day, I dont think this is a good idea. First of all, once that precedence is started, then they'll use an excuse to tax vitamins and minerals to subsudize whatever they perceive is a negative affect from vitamin use, next our fresh squeezed fruit juices.
