Why Celebrate Cinco de Mayo?

A Little Bit of History

Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of the people of Mexico and how they stood up to the opposition of the army of the French trying to take over possession of their country. It is not a celebration of victory in the time of war. It is a celebration of the victory of the people to stand up to foreign intrusion in their country. And so, the people of Mexico set aside May 5th as their day to celebrate their taking that stand for their country and people. Moreover, it's a day when the Mexican people put forth a day they call a fiesta...a day to celebrate what is the best of their land and people and culture.

What You Will Experience at the Fiesta!

Cinco de Mayo is celebrated firstly in their own country; but is now becoming widely celebrated throughout the United States. The fiestas usually begin with a parade, special music with Mariachi bands and dancers in beautiful costumes performing traditional dances. Beautifully dressed singers and musicians sing songs to commemorate the ways of their native land. It's a day to sample what is the best of Mexico and its people. The day is finally capped off with a wonderful display of fireworks.

When I lived in Denver Colorado, Cinco de Mayo was celebrated in a large way and I always enjoyed joining the festivities. Here in Virginia, on the Chesapeake Bay, it is not celebrated as much as I think it should. Great lens, see you around the galaxy...
