Cindy Lou Who Costume

Who's so sweet that she can melt the heart of even the Grinch? Why Cindy Lou Who, of course! Though only seen on three pages in the original 1957 book How the Grinch Stole Christmas, two-year-old Cindy Lou stole the heart of grinches everywhere and wormed her way into larger parts with the 1966 cartoon and 2000 live action movie.

1957 Book Cindy Lou Who

Antenna Headband

When creating the Whoville characters, Seuss purposefully drew them as a cute cross between small insects and humans. Original Whoville residents wore simple antenna.

The original Cindy Lou Who was bald. (She was two.) Unless you want to shave your head, pair antenna with the 1966 hair below.

Simple Pink Nightgown

In both the book and the 1966 cartoon, Cindy Lou wore a light pink night gown. For a warmer version, look for a fluffy pink robe and pair with flesh toned leggings and long sleeved tshirt.

1966 Cartoon Cindy Lou Who

Short Blond Wig

Unlike Cindy Lou's elaborate hairstyle in the 2000 movie and her bald head in the book, the cartoon version of Cindy Lou Who shows short blond locks. Style hair simply and tie two red bows in the back.

Also see antenna and pajama above in book version.

Red Christmas Ornament

Cindy Lou carries a giant red Christmas ornament. If wearing this costume for trick-or-treating on Halloween, look for a large red bubble purse or paint a pumpkin bucket red.

2000 Movie Cindy Lou Who

Cindy Lou Who takes a much more prominent role in the 2000 movie version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas. While Cindy Lou is confined to her home on Christmas Eve in the book, she meets the Grinch on the street and in the stores in Whoville. She later appears on top of the Grinch's sleigh that's loaded down with stolen gifts and trees just before it slides down the side of Mt. Crumpit. Because of this she wears multiple outfits and hairstyles.

Red Caped Cindy

When Cindy Lou Who first meets the Grinch while walking down the street, she's wearing a red velvet cape with white trim around the hood and down the front. A simple Little Red Riding Hood style cape can be easily turned into Cindy's cape by attaching fun fur (with a whip stitch or hot glue) to the edges of the coat. She wears a cute black and white gingham dress under the cape with red leggings.

Hair should be worn in typical Movie Cindy-Lou fashion (see below) but with a tea cup fascinator.

Pink Pajamas

Polka Dots!

In a lesser-known scene of the movie, Cindy Lou wears a white gown with large red polka dots, puffed sleeves, peter pan collar and a red velvet short vest. Hair should be worn up in with the ends of the braids and top hair curled. Tie braids with matching red and white ribbons. She also wears a large, red beaded choker. See photo....

Cindy Lou Who Movie Hair

While Cindy Lou's hair looks complicated in the movie, it's actually fairly easy to achieve... even with short hair. Divide the the hair in half horizontally. Put the lower half in a hair elastic so it's out of the way. With the top hair, divide down the center and put an empty water bottle on the top of the head. (Look for 6 or 8 oz bottles for shorter hair.) Gather hair around the bottle on all sides and twist an elastic around the hair under the rim of the bottle cap. Poof the remainder of the ends and secure to the top of the water bottle. Tye a red bow around top portion.

For the bottom hair, part hair and braid into two braids. According to hair style, either loop and attach to head with bobby pins or let hang loose.

Hmmm...for some reason the Grinch story as never appealed to me. I do, however, recall my kids really enjoying the animated TV version when they were growing up.
