Emile Hirsch, James Franco and Diego Luna co-star in director Gus Van Sant's compelling biopic, which also earned Oscar nods for Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor (Brolin).

002- Brokeback Mountain

Liam Neeson provides a fascinating portrait of theorist and zoologist Dr. Alfred Kinsey, whose name has been associated with human sexuality ever since he interviewed thousands of people about their sex lives and released his findings in a groundbreaking 1948 book, Sexual Behavior in the Human Male. The book caused ripples in the scientific community and paved the way for further inquiry into the subject. Laura Linney and Peter Sarsgaard co-star.

005- The Hours

This gripping drama follows the parallel lives of three 20th-century women: the incomparable Virginia Woolf (Nicole Kidman), an unsatisfied 1950s housewife (Julianne Moore), and a modern-day book editor (Meryl Streep) who's losing her former lover to AIDS. Kidman collected a Best Actress Oscar for her role in director Stephen Daldry's adaptation of Michael Cunningham's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel.

007- Imagine Me & You

On a quest to attend either Oxford or Cambridge, the teens grapple with the intricacies of university entrance exams and admissions, ultimately learning as much about the education system as they do about academics.

009- Angels in America

Tony Kushner's groundbreaking, Pulitzer Prize-winning Broadway play about love, loss and loneliness -- the basis for this six-hour HBO miniseries -- took more than 10 years to make it to the small screen. Starring Al Pacino (as real-life legal counsel Roy Cohn) and Meryl Streep, the drama examines the first few years of the AIDS epidemic in the mid-1980s, set against the moral absolutism and unresponsive backdrop of the Reagan Administration.

010- Gia

A young Angelina Jolie is mesmerizing in her breakout role as supermodel Gia Carangi, a cover girl who lived fast and died at age 26 from the ravages of AIDS, in this fact-based HBO biopic that won an Emmy and two Golden Globes. The film follows Gia from busing tables at her father's diner to the glamorous world of high-fashion photography -- and finally to her downward spiral into drugs and toxic relationships. Faye Dunaway co-stars.

011- Iris

Iris Murdoch (Judi Dench and Kate Winslet, in Oscar-nominated roles) was l'enfant terrible of the literary world in early 1950s Britain -- a live wire who thumbed her nose at conformity via a voracious and scandalous sexual appetite. In this snippet of her life, an aging Murdoch (Dench) faces the onset of Alzheimer's disease and the loss of memories about her younger self (Winslet). Jim Broadbent won the Oscar for his portrayal of her husband.

012- Gray Matters

Sam (Thomas Cavanagh) and Gray (Heather Graham) are a devoted brother and sister who share a dwelling and a love of many things -- ballroom dancing, 1940s movie musicals and, much to their surprise, strong feelings for an attractive woman (Bridget Moynahan). But Gray, who's historically heterosexual, is confused by her strange new feelings. Sibling rivalry, love and destiny go topsy-turvy in first-time writer-director Sue Kramer's romantic romp.

013- A Home at the End of the World

Boyhood pals Bobby (Colin Farrell) and Jonathan (Dallas Roberts) both love the same woman (Robin Wright Penn), but in different ways. (For one thing, Jonathan is gay). Yet, undaunted, they all try to make a life together -- and even have a baby -- in 1980s New York. Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Cunningham's novel gets deft treatment in this story about a troika of close friends who enter into an unconventional living arrangement.

014- Hedwig and the Angry Inch

After a botched sex-change operation, East German glam rocker Hansel (John Cameron Mitchell) becomes Hedwig and travels across the United States with a stage show, following her ex-boyfriend (and former band mate) and telling her life story. Hedwig's offbeat show slays audiences -- but in diners not clubs. Mitchell also wrote and directed the comedy, which won at the Sundance Film Festival and was nominated for several Independent Spirit Awards.

015- Saving Face

Dutiful daughter Wil (Michelle Krusiec) sidesteps her mother's (Joan Chen) attempts to marry her off in Alice Wu's romantic comedy. At 28, Wil's the old maid of her traditional Chinese family, so there's no way she can tell them about her budding lesbian romance with Vivian (Lynn Chen). But her widowed mom has her own problems, as she learns she's pregnant at 48. Kicked out by her disapproving father, she seeks refuge at Wil's place.
