Cinque Terre: Five Lands by the Sea

Cinque Terre, comprised of five seaside villages along the Italian Riviera in Liguria, Italy, also includes a national park (Parco Nazionale delle Cinque Terre). The area stretches along a rugged coastline where scenic vistas of the sea, sand, olive groves, cliffs and colorful villages are a haven for artists and photographers.

Travelers are attracted to the area to experience another aspect of Italy and to take a break from visiting museums and monuments. Although Cinque Terre is a very popular tourist destination, it is renown for its laid-back charm, quaint villages and spectacular beauty.

Linger and enjoy your stay!

Five Villages - Getting Around

Cinque Terre - Transportation Between the Five Villages

Cinque Terre, Liguria, ItalyThe five villages, namely Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso al Mare, are connected by train, boat and footpaths and many a tourist comes here to hike the paths between the villages. Also, travelers in wheelchairs are able to use the path between Riomaggiore and Manarola.

An interesting alternative to hiking all of the paths between the villages is to take a boat from Riomaggiore to Monterosso (or vice versa), hike along a few of the paths between the villages and then take the train the rest of the way. This combination provides opportunities for very different vantage points to take those treasured photographs. Some of the sections of the paths are very challenging, so if you are not the type to do a lot of hiking, you could also choose to go on a boat ride and then take the train and stop to visit each of the villages. This option also provides a lot of great photo ops.

Note on Cinque Terre's Walking Paths

Some of the walking paths that connect the villages are very challenging, so make sure you are dressed for hiking and wear proper footwear. If you plan on wearing sandals, they will have to be very sturdy and comfortable - flimsy sandals won't work and could cause an injury.
