The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairlyland...

Ranked #11,013 in Books, Poetry & Writing, #389,465 overall

...in a Ship of her Own Making.

This is the story of 11 year old September (from Omaha, Nebraska, and born on a tuesday), who having grown tired of her father's home with its pink and yellow teacups and its matching gravy boats decides to escape out the window with the Green Wind, climbing onto the back of his leopard of little breezes and flying off towards fairyland.

Oops! One of her shoes falls off in the process!

Once there September begins to realise that Fairyland is a more sinister and troubled place than she imagined.

She meets a Wyvery (a wyvern whose father was a library), a woman made completely out of soap and the Marquess.

Opposite: A textiles art piece I made of September and the Leopard of Little Breezes. I'll tell you more about that below.

Catherynne M. Valente releases a new chapter every Monday!

The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of her Own Making is an online novel by Catherynne M Valente. It's a free book although donations would be gratefully received (you'll find the paypal buttons to do this on the site). Catherynne would rather people read the book for free than not at all and asks only that you pay what you think it's worth and only if you can afford it.

Catherynne apparently never intended to write "The Girl Who..." but decided that she had to do something to help her family out of a sticky situation. You can find out more here.

As well as being able to read the book for free (if you don't want to donate for whatever reason) you can also download free audio versions of the chapters too and author's commentary!

The original conception for the book was in Valente's novel Palimpsest (below).

The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making was described as a children's book from the 1920s that was a favourite of the Palimpsest protagonist, November. It was written by Hortense Francis Weckweet .

Sure! It's a great way to promote yourself. If somebody likes your free stuff maybe they will come back and buy your other stuff!

Having read Free by Chris Anderson, I think it might just be a genius way to get noticed.

OK, I haven't read Palimpsest myself although it's on my wishlist - I just need to get through my sizeable To Be Read book pile and find some spare cash from somewhere but this is what I gather it's about:

Palimpsest is a magical place and you can only get there through dreams after sex but there is a terrible cost if you want to live there forever. The story follows 4 travellers to Palimpsest who have all experienced loss in their lives. Hmm... sounds interesting. So I'm guessing it's not a children's book like The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making.

The Fairyland Museum

Not only is this a free book with free audio versions of the chapters and author's commentary but The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making also comes with it's own museum.

Click here to visit the Fairyland Museum.

There was also a competition to win all of Catherynne's books.

To enter you had to make something related to the story. Below you will see my initial doodled idea for a textiles piece. It features September (missing on of her shoes) sat on the back of the Leopard Of Little Breezes with the Wyvery in the background. iN the finished piece I didn't add the Wyvery (a beast who is half wyvern, half library).

I didn't win, by the way! :(
