Poster Art From The Greatest Show On Earth

The circus art created to advertise the world famous Barnum and Bailey Circus also called The Greatest Show on Earth is still something that we can decorate a room with. Whether we decide to use this circus art in our family room, a child's bedroom, or even our office; it is sure to be a conversation piece.

At a time in our history when there was no radio or television, many families looked forward to the circus came to town. It was entertainment at its best for many Americans. A family could see exotic animals, daredevil acts, clowns, and just about anything they could imagine.

P. T. Barnum and J. A. Bailey were one of the very early stars in bringing incredible acts to small towns and big cities across the United States. I'll show you some examples of the Circus Art and give you a little history of the Barnum and Bailey Circus.

Circus Art - P T Barnum and J. A. Bailey

A wonderful poster made from an early circus poster advertising "The Greatest Show On Earth" with portraits of P. T. Barnum and J. A. Bailey featured.

In the 1860s, J. A. Bailey was a part of the circus known as the Cooper and Bailey Circus. In 1875, P T Barnum backed a circus that carried his name. By 1881, Bailey and Barnum merged their circus acts to become The Barnum And Bailey Greatest Show On Earth.

Lady Clown Circus Art

Evetta From Barnum And Bailey Circus

In 1895 there were not many women in circus acts in any circus. Evetta was billed as the only lady clown traveling with the Barnum and Bailey Circus. Evetta was really the acrobat Josephine Matthews.

This poster of produced from an original piece of circus art is significant because there were many families who believed that women should not perform in the circus. Wearing what was looked at as being scantily clad for the times, these were wicked women.

Edward Henry Potthast Circus Art

Barnum and Bailey Circus

Originally created by Edward Henry Potthast around 1895 advertising "The Greatest Show On Earth" by Barnum and Bailey. As mentioned above, women wearing what was deemed as inappropriate clothing and performing acrobatics were looked at as unacceptable. This included women doing equestrian tricks.

This example of circus art in 1895 is significant because it shows a woman riding a horse.

I do have an appreciation for circus art. It portraits all the excitement of going to the circus. I love the beautifully detailed tigers, horses, lions, and acrobats. Angel Blessed**

One year our son and a friend of his were chosen to go down to the big ring and be a part of the Opening Ceremonies for Barnum and Bailey. He was about 4 yrs old. I had a collage of pictures, the program, etc. framed for him. Hmmmmmm. I will have to pull that back out and remind him since he is 32 yrs old now.
