Experiencing Cirque du Soleil
Cirque du Soleil does many things differently from what you might consider to be a traditional circus.First of all, they decided to not involve any animal acts. Walking into a Cirque bigtop tent smells a lot better than other circus I've ever seen...LOL! I'm sure it makes for easier travel and accommodations to not have to move and care for animals.
The shows do not involve outright dialog or talking. There is often singing, or more accurately, vocalization. The human voice gets utilized, but any wording is primarily sounds and syllables that aren't any specific language, even if you think the singer is telling a story. They are, it's just using sounds and not words. This lets Cirque du Soleil play anywhere in the world and not worry about translating their show into different languages. Music and sound are already universal and they make the most of that.
There is a very strong tradition represented of what I call "European clowning." I tend to think of modern, American clowning as being more about the quick joke and the sudden pratfall, whereas the clowning in Cirque du Soleil is much more along the lines of a storyteller who puts in some truly clever visual or physical jokes to help illustrate and move the story along.
