Let's See What Other People Say About This Watch
And this is one of them:
The Review:
"I am a collector of watches, to my wife's dismay... But, this is a beautiful watch that I am very proud to own. This is my third Citizen watch (among many others), but my favorite of the bunch. It is a bit on the thick & heavy side, but that is what I was looking for; something with substance. The luminescent hands are very bright and long lasting. The watch takes a good amount of sunlight to fully charge, but even in a partially charged state, it works just fine. Once fully charged, it rarely, if ever moves off of the fully charged indicator. I have the stainless steel band and it has proved to be durable and attractive. The titanium is tougher but has a satin finish rather than a glossy finish.
I tend to be hard on my crystals and so far, so good. This one has a flat, hardened crystal and looks great. Get this one, you will love it! Amazon has a great price on it and Citizen stands behind their products."
And here is another:
"This watch is gorgeous! I sized it as soon as it arrived and put it on before hitting the door to catch a plane. The bracelet is beautiful too. Just be careful when adjusting the links . . . there's a sleeve for the link pins that has to be put back in to get the pins to stay in. All of the dials are easy to read. I like the size and weight of the watch too. The Eco Drive is a great feature, no winding and no special case needed as with the automatics . . . just expose the watch to light and it keeps going. The meter to show how much reserve power is in the batter is good for letting you know when it's time to give the watch some sun."

- Citizen AV0031-59A chronograph watch
NB: this watch had stiff competition. In terms of "normal" watches it was bought as my ultimate, last -and most expensive - watch out of roughly 15 so my demands on it were greatest.
Pros:
. The watch arrived well on time and budget. I was very happy with the price - I might have got it for a few dollars cheaper but I was satisfied with the deal, especially as there were quotes of well over $100 more on the various websites.
. The watch looks, feels and is spectacular. It is undoubtedly a great watch, but also see the cons. The weight, 187 grams, or six and a half ounces for those of you who live in an antediluvial world, is no issue at all. It is supremely comfortable on my 175mm (seven inch, ditto) wrist.
. By and large, with one huge exception, the alarm, it does everything it's supposed to.
. The ivory-white face has a subtle ribbed effect, which I find attractive. It looks a little like the pictures I've seen of the titanium version.
. Like all quartz-based watches it keeps great time.
. I haven't really tried the chronograph much. It is unclear whether the chronograph uses much power, which has put me off using it much but it works fine.
. I have read reviews criticising the luminosity. I disagree. My experience is it's by far the best watch I've seen in this regard.
. Similarly, the crystal. Despite this watch being big and robust I do expect to look after it so I won't be taking a hammer to it to see if the crystal is good enough! It certainly seems fine and is no more vulnerable than any of my other watches, including my ATO787.
Cons:
. What is is with US watch sellers? Why can't you fill out warranty cards? I have received two relatively expensive watches from the US in the past two months, including this one, and on neither occasion was the warranty card filled out at all despite the enclosed booklet spuiking the international warranty. In the same period I received two watches from Singapore and while their warranty cards are not fully filled out, at least there was some attempt.
. The watch took an eternity to get to and keep at level 3 power. Initially, for four days, it got there from time to time then dropped back to level 2. It finally stuck at level 3 after five days. And I live in a very bright eastern Australian climate - it's summer! No, I didn't leave it out in the blazing sun!
. I have two Seiko kinetics and four Eco-drives, including this one. The kinetics keep very slightly better time than the Eco-drives but we are talking about a few seconds a month! My most accurate watches are straight quartz models, which I generally don't like because their batteries can pack up without warning.
. This is not a criticism but I regard it as a special watch. It really is too big to wear on formal occasions unless you are a pop star or garish sportsman. I wouldn't want it as my only watch.
. It was extraordinarily hard to line up the minute hand with the second hand - it seemed ok when set then moved after a while - I am still trying after some days perhaps now with success.
. The second hand doesn't always match the marks on its dial.
. The screw-in crown is somewhat clumsy.
. The alarm is a joke, not that I proposed to use it - mobile phones are much better for that - but if an expensive piece of technology has a feature, it's supposed to work! When the alarm does go off it is so quiet as to be inaudible; hardly an "alarm"!
Summary:
After my enormously high expectations for this watch it was initially a disappointment but after about a week it is coming into its own. Fortunately I had read reviews that warned me about the alarm so that wasn't particularly disappointing.
Now that the teething troubles are over, and assuming the watch stays healthy, I expect that this will be the prize among my watches for many years to come.
