One-on-one help from our best veteran lensmasters!

Where can you help an awesome Web 2.0 company move forward, test unreleased features, and get hints from the masters on how to be great?

Why as a Citizen Squid of course!

Citizen Squids started as a panel of volunteer lensmasters, who in exchange for weekly assignments, got first dibs on new features, learned the top skills from our awesome staff, and saw how our top secret projects worked before we even launched them!

Now, the Citizens are a little different. They work as mentors in specific areas to provide solutions and help lensmasters one-on-one.

Think you're ready to be a Citizen Squid? Read on to find out what Citizenship entails, what we're currently looking for, and how to apply.

Our Current Mentors

We currently have seven fabulous lensmasters serving as mentors for important areas of Squidoo.
Content Mentor: Barkely
While images and videos and interactive modules add a lot to your lens, content is still king. Learn how to write fluent content, and spell and grammar check, with your mentor Barkely.
Lens Promotion Mentor: jeffwend
A lens without traffic is like a fisherman without a rod (or spear, or bow, work with me). To do well, lenses need eyeballs, and jeffwend is your man for helping you get it.
Module Mentor: Ener-G
Energy is certainly what you'll get with our Module Mentor! She is an expert at using modules to their full potential and teaching you how to find the hidden ones.
HTML & CSS Mentor: Trekkiemelissa
You don't have to know a scrap of code to make your lens fancy with colors, borders, and cool coding effects. Melissa makes it easy to copy, paste, and edit code.
Giant Squid Mentor: RMS
Robin is a lady who has her hands full, but she always has time to offer advice to wanna-be Giant Squids. Learn more about the Giants program and find out how you can join this elite group.
Image & Video Mentor: LindaJM
If you're not great at writing, you know what they say: a picture says a thousand words. (And a video even more!) Learn how to let visual aids do the talking with tips for using the photo and video modules available through Squidoo.
First Lens Mentor: lakeerieartists
Hooray for Paula, who's out there helping new lensmasters create totally awesome first lenses.

Content Mentor: Barkely

While images and videos and interactive modules add a lot to your lens, content is still king.

With technology reducing sentences to 140 characters and text messaging negating the need to spell, many web authors are finding their skills could use some polishing. Learn dozens of great ways to make sure the words on your lens are as awesome as the other features.

You can also get personal help from Barkely, a Citizen Squid and your Content Mentor.

Lens Promotion Mentor: jeffwend

One of the most often asked questions in the Squidu Forums is, "How do I get traffic to my lens?"

The most obvious way to generate traffic to your lens is to make sure that it is search engine friendly. But that is a topic that deserves its own lens.

This lens is here for me to share my favorite off site methods of generating traffic and links to your lens. They can be time consuming and will take some effort, but then again, most things that are worthwhile in life do not come easy either.

Module Mentor: Ener-G

What makes Squidoo different than other help-you-build-it websites?

One feature is modules.

Modules are sections of a lens that you add depending on what kind of content you want to add. Want to create a list of links? Add a link module. Want to write a story? Add the write module. Want to sell something from Amazon? Add the Amazon module. And so on.

Here you can learn more information about adding modules and using them. You can also get personal help from from ME, gia, aka Ener-G, a Citizen Squid and your Modules Mentor.

HTML & CSS Mentor: Trekkiemelissa

Many of you start writing your lenses without any HTML and CSS, but as you start understanding Squidoo, you want to learn how to spice your lenses up. HTML and CSS is just the ticket that you may be looking for.

Here, on this lens, you will learn from me how to use HTML and CSS. My name is Trekkiemelissa and I am your HTML and CSS Mentor; a citizen Squid.

To find your answer, look through the links below. If you still can't find the answer, please leave a message in the guestbook and I'll get back to you!

Nice introduction to the members on Squidoo. I agree with Christopher Scott about getting a marketing mentor. I'll try to inspire our marketing guru to start contributing on Squidoo.

Nice to know all the mentors of Squidoo. I am pretty nervous about writing lenses as I am a newbie. I do really hope to have some tips on marketing my eco-friendly products online and how to get traffic as I do not friends or relatives to depend on.

Nice to know there are 'mentors' out there in Squidoo-land willing and able to help us who are just getting started. I appreciate knowing about these resources. Thank you. Now, can anyone tell me how I get past the 'writers block' I appear to be in? I have quite a few ideas for lenses, and seem 'stuck' on getting started, wondering what I should do first! Took me nearly a month to do my 2nd lens and even though I'm pleased with the way it turned out, I'm right back to being stuck on starting my 3rd. lens. Guess I'm worrying too much and should just DO IT! :-). Have a good day all you mentors. You are fabulous.

Are you a wizard at using Squidoo?

Do you have what it takes to be a Citizen?

Are you interested in becoming a Citizen Squid Mentor? Here's what we're looking in Mentors.
  1. A commitment of 4-months plus.
It's nice to have our Citizen Mentors available to work with the community for a bit longer, so lensmasters know who they can go to for questions and answers. If it works out, you might even be able to join us for longer!
  2. An hour or two a week.
Once your mentor lens has been created, it's mostly a job of managing incoming questions. Most mentors report only a few new questions a week, since new questions get added to your how-to lens. Occasionally, you'll be given the chance to write articles to appear in newsletters and on our blog.
  3. Must work well with others.
Not only will you be working with lensmasters to answer questions, you'll have to work with me. Ha! And the rest of our large community. We're looking for volunteers with a soothing customer service voice.
  4. Leaders wanted.
We're looking for people who aren't afraid to get out there and make things happen. Many assignments involve meeting new people, creating something brand new, and stepping outside your comfort zone. Are you ready?

HELP WANTED: SEO Mentor, Tools Mentor, MoneyMaker Mentor

Every once in a while we add a new Mentor to our mix, to even further help lensmasters with specific niche areas of lensmastery and promotion.

We're currently seeking three new mentors to add to our list of professionals. Could you be next?

SEO Mentor: help lensmasters authentically promote their lenses by selecting the right tags, and participating in directories, forums, user groups, etc.
Tools Mentor: help lensmasters master the basic tools of Squidoo, such as lens ratings, lensrolling, groups, forum, and exports.
MoneyMaker Mentor: help lensmasters get the most out of the moneymaker modules, such as eBay, Cafepress, and Amazon.

ALL applicants:
* Must be knowledgeable about getting started with and using Squidoo
* Must be able to communicate kindly with lensmasters
* Must be able and willing to answer questions one-on-one with users
* Should be able to write short articles and how-tos from time to time
* Should be an active lensmaster and active on forums
* Should be willing to do self-promotion as a Mentor

Once selected, most new Mentors will take over the lens of a previous mentor, or create a new one from scratch, so they can showcase info and answer questions. There are a lot of great resources out there already, so chances are you won't even have to develop your own stuff from scratch - just use the featured lenses and links modules to point to all the great resources. But you should be able to answer questions and look up info if a lensmaster asks you directly. Of course, I (Kimberly, your Community Organizer) am always available as a resource.

Interested in applying?

If you're interested in one of the open positions above, post a note in the guestbook below with the following info:

* Contact info
* Which Mentor position you're applying for
* Why you'd be great for this position. What qualities do you have that will allow you to fulfill the responsibilities listed above? Have you already published lenses on this topic?

We'll take a look at your application and let you know!

Are you ready to be a Citizen Squid?

If you want to be the next Citizen Mentor, submit your application here. And be sure to follow all the rules above. Thanks!

Thank you to our former Mentors!

Thanks to some special people who have worked hard to support our lensmasters and Squidoo!
