Founded as a sugar plantation in the early mid 1800s, The City of Sugar Land Texas was incorporated in 1959, and is the largest city in Fort Bend County, and the 3rd largest in population in the Houston Metropolitan area. In 1988, The City of Sugar Land Texas City Council officially determined the correct spelling of the city name to be Sugar
Land Texas. Previous to that, it had always been a point of confusion as some spelt it Sugarland and some Sugar Land.
The City of Sugar Land is home to the headquarters of Imperial Sugar which has the distinction of being the oldest continuously operated business in the State of Texas at over 150 years old. By giving tax incentives to medium to large size companies, several corporate headquarters have relocated to the area in the last few years. In late 2007, The City of Sugar Land landed the headquarters for The Coca-Cola company's Minute Maid Division, and they plan to move to The City of Sugar Land starting in 2008. A good part of City of Sugar Land's growth is focused on making The City of Sugar Land an employment center, so people can live here as well as work here.
The City of Sugar Land has the most master-planned communities in Fort Bend County. And Fort Bend County has the largest number of master-planned communities in the nation. In 2006 CNN/Money and Money magazine ranked The City of Sugar Land 3rd on its list of the 100 Best Cities to Live in the United States.
In 2007, The City of Sugar Land was ranked 5th on a list of Safest Cities in the United States, according to the latest national crime statistics.
