The City of Sugar Land has grown from less than 10,000 population in 1981, to over an estimated 80,000 people in 2008. We have had controlled but rapid growth over the last 28 years. And because the growth has been fast, most everything here looks clean and new. It is a constant struggle to keep our local landmarks from being replaced by newer buildings.

The new Sugar Land City Hall and plaza, is now a cornerstone of The City of Sugar Land Town Square, and a focal point for families in the area.

Sugar Land Town Square is the heart of the entertainment district in City of Sugar Land and in Fort Bend County. It has a variety of restaurants, sidewalk cafes, shops, a Marriott Hotel and conference center, mid-rise offices and homes, townhouses, a public plaza, and the Sugar Land City Hall. Festivals and important events take place in the plaza, as well as monthly outdoor movies.

Sugar Land is home to the practice sites of the Houston Aeros and Houston Comets. The Sugar Land Ice and Sports Center, the practice facility for the Houston Aeros, is also a public ice skating facility. It is located close by the Sugar Land Town Plaza.

And for those that want traditional mall shopping, First Colony Mall is a very large mall that has the original indoor design but now has added outdoor activities, several parking garages, all very family oriented.. The mall is anchored by Dillard's, Macy's, JCPenney, and Barnes & Noble, along with over 130 other stores. Other major retailers
located near the mall in various portions of the Town Center area include Target, Best Buy, Circuit City, Toys R Us, Linens 'n Things, Finger Furniture, Petsmart, Kroger, Garden Ridge, Lowe's, Lane Home Furnishings, and DSW, as well as a new and already an award-winning Mercedes-Benz dealership.

Several family oriented eating establishments are in the area, including The Cheesecake Factory, and several of the Cold Stone/Marble Slab Ice creameries are close by, where you can stroll for desert after your meal.
