How to tweak Civilization 5 settings

Read This First

Go to Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 5\ The files ending with .ini are the ones you're going to be editing with a text editor like notepad (not word!)

Usersettings.ini: holds user preferences
GraphicsSettingsDX9.ini: graphics settings for DirectX 9 mode
GraphicsSettingsDX11.ini: graphics settings for DirectX 10&11 modes
Config.ini: general game preferences

Buy The Official Civilization 5 Game

Owning the legal version will usually prevent most bugs

Crashes due to DirectX incompatibilities

Make sure your installation of DirectX and Visual C++ runtime libraries are up to date.
1. Go to C:\Program files\Steam\Steamapps\Common\sid meier's civilization v\
2. Run \Steamapps\Common\sid meier's civilization v\VCRedist\vcredist_x86.exe to update VC++ libraries
3. Run \Steamapps\Common\sid meier's civilization v\DirectX\DXSetup.exe to update DirectX

Civilization 5 will work with all direct versions from DirectX 9 to DirectX11. Your graphics card needs to support the DirectX however. Your windows will also need to be able to run the DirectX version. Windows XP supports 9, Vista supports 9 and 10, Windows 7 supports all. If your Windows is compatible the problem is with your graphics card. Just switch to an older DirectX if this is the case.

Unable To Save Game Progress To Hard Drive

This problem can be caused by an incorrectly set save folder location in your config.ini file.

1. Open the Config.ini file using your text editor (probably wordpad or notepad)
2. Look in the [Game] section
3. Find FileName
4. Set a proper saved games folder. (usually C:\Users\YourComputerUserName\Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 5\Saves\)
5. Save the file and run the game

Civilization 5 Crash To Desktop After Intro Movie

On certain hardware configurations and resolutions the game can crash.

The easy fix for this you just turn off the intro movie.

1. Edit usersettings.ini with your text editor (notepad or wordpad usually)
2. Look for SkipIntroVideo, set it to 1

Crash When I Try To Run Full Screen Mode

Sometimes Civilization 5 crashes when launched in Full Screen Mode. The fix is to run it windowed since there's no direct fix for it right now.
1. Edit GraphicsSettingsDX9 (or 10 or 11, depending on what you set up your game to use!) using your text editor (usually wordpad or notepad)
2. Find fullscreen, change it to 0
3. Go to the Cache folder and delete all *.db files inside
4. The game should now start in windowed mode

Civilization 5 Black Screen Upon Launch Or Out of Range Error

Try running the game in another resolution. This can fix the problem. You'll want to run the game in a common resolution. For example 1024x768
1. Open GraphicsSettingsDX9.ini (or 10 or 11 depending on your setup) with your Text Editor (Notepad or Wordpad)
2. Find WindowsResX and WindowResY
3. Change the x to 1024 (or another resolution you want it to run in)
4. Change the y to 768%u2026

It'll look like this:

WindowResX = 1024
WindowResY = 768

DEP continues to shut down the game during the intro. Changing the value 0 to 1 in notepad did not help. In Steam notepad, regarding cache, I see the following info repeatedly: Cache(7) and Cache 202 is shutting down
The game was doing fine until late in the game; I just replaced my video card to Nvidia GEForce GTX 550 Ti with driver version 8.17.12.9573 due to crashes in game but this did not fix the DEP issue. I need a fix!

Set the graphics to minimal, then try downloading the new (released early 2012) mod pack "Unofficial Patch and Vanilla Enhanced". It fixes hundreds of bugs in the game and has significantly reduce the number of crashes during my games (still not perfect, auto-save regularly). Download and install the mod, check it in the installed area of the mods. Start the game in the mod area and hopefully that will help. I nearly gave up playing Civ 5 until I found this mod, it was just updated the end of April 2012. You can also run the game without steam on after loading it. Load the game, then use the task manager to force steam to close.

    Hello,

I have the Civilization 5 Black Screen Upon Launch Or Out of Range Error. I changed the resolution as suggested but i still get a black screen that flashes. I have uninstalled steam, deleted Civ 5 files then replaced. Even got the disk after deleting all data to try and reinstall. All files are also validated so i am extremely confused as to the problem atm. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hello. I have a problem that I haven't seen posted yet. I am able to get Civ5 up and running using Direct x 9, but the game isn't displayed correctly. It's like the game isn't displaying letters in english, all the menus are unreadable and makes the game impossible to play. I have re installed the game many times making sure it is installed in english, but I still get the same unreadable menus. Any ideas?

I have the same problem. It is all in English, but the words are too jagged to read. Has anyone solved this problem?

Hi. I have been playing civ 5 for a year now and its been amazing. Suddenly, a few days ago I clicked on civ to play it, it went to the menu where i picked the recommended version and then nothing. No blank screen, no error message. Just nothing happens. I restarted steam - Nothing. Restarted my laptop - nothing. HELP??

My civ 5 freezes after clicking the first button to enter into the main menu. The intro plays fine and the task manager says the game is still running. I am using windows 7. All I can see when this happens is the statue of atlas. I am going to try to reinstall the game hoping that fixes the problem.

It is quite strange that two times my computer crashed when I reached the years 2036 or 2040. I could not continue further. Is this the end of the world? or the end of civilazation?
    My computer details:
    Windows 7 Home Premium
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.5 GHz
    RAM 4 GB
    Display Card: NVIDIA GeForce 9300 M G
    Resolution: 1280 x 1024
I would appreciate if someone can help with an idea
  • daryl Jun 24, 2011 @ 2:38 pm | delete
make sure your game settings aren't on time victory, where the game ends after 500 turns. you can change that in advanced settings in the game menu
  • TK Oct 17, 2010 @ 12:13 am | delete
hi, the game keeps crashing periodically and every time I try to load a saved game once I am in the game (though not at start up).

    Specs:
    i5 760
    4GB RAM
NVIDIA GTS 450 with 1 GB memory
    Windows 7 64bit

It doesn't matter if I am running DirectX 9 or 11. I've installed the latest drivers for the graphics card as well as DirectX/C++ library. I've also changed my graphics settings to medium. Anyone having the same problems/know how to fix?

    Many thanks.

Hey TK your computer sounds very similar to mine, my civ 5 kept crashing using direct X 10 and 11 but works fine using direct X 9
  • Jason Oct 16, 2010 @ 2:58 pm | delete
Sometimes (it seems to happen usually during golden ages), the "food/production/etc. focus" options don't work right. For example, switching from default to "Food Focus" will decrease my food but increase my production, and "Production Focus" will decrease my production! Another particularly bad bug that I've only had happen once is that one of my cities (a puppet city) is not working its city square, and without annexing it, there's nothing I can do to fix it. At least the patch fixed some of the really, really stupid bugs that should never have made it into the release version, like the GPT diplomacy bug and how trying to sort cities by science sorted them randomly instead. This game could have been so much better, but it suffers from really shoddy design and playtesting.

Laptop specs: Samsung R580; Core i5; 4gb memory; win7 32-bit; nvidia geforce gt 330m graphics with 1gb memory.

game crashes after a while in windowed dx10/11 mode and when i try to start it up with dx9 mode it doesn't launch at all, just crashes.

    what to do?
  • ac Oct 11, 2010 @ 12:25 am | delete
Hey, unfortunately I have tried all these fixes and nothing is working. I try to open Civ 5 using direct X 9 and a black screen appears for less then a second, then I am back to the desktop as if nothing has happened. I have tried reinstillation, changing the resolution (even trying at X - 800 and Y - 600), and switching away from full screen mode.

I am running Windows Vista (service pack 2), 2 MB of memory, Intel Core 2 2.00GHz processor, with an integrated graphics card :(.

Do you think it is the graphics card? If so I would expect some kind of error. When I try to run the program using Direct X 10/11, I don't get a black screen but get an error saying windows has detected an error.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks
  • Johnson Oct 11, 2010 @ 7:27 pm | delete
Yes, I think that's a problem with your graphical card. Be sure to use the latest video drivers...

Yuo'll have to be more specific than that :) What kind of crash, what is your system (which windows version, which graphical card), do you have the game legally or did you download warez?
  • Guy Oct 7, 2010 @ 12:08 pm | delete
    Hey!

I tried locating my "usersettings.ini" file but i just doesn't appear anywhere.

    Help pls!
  • Wooden-Crosses Oct 7, 2010 @ 12:15 pm | delete
Try typing usersettings.ini in your search bar when in the documents folder. I don't know your system so it can be in a different location.. Especially if you're using multiple hard drives. But a fool proof way is to simply use the search function in windows. Be sure you edit the correct file though, you'll know if it's correct if it's in the civilization 5 folder somewhere under documents :)
