Clara's Jumbo Crayon Keeper
Oversized Crayon Keepers Provide Colorful Storage For Classroom Use
This lens was my project for Day 3 of the "Get Cracking" Challenge with Bonnie and Robin.
This assignment was to write about something green, and as you can see, my green project is actually green in color as well!
I hope you enjoy crafting your jumbo crayon keeper as much as I enjoyed creating mine. I've included a coloring page that you can use as a painting pattern for your own crayon keeper. Please feel free to create as many as you would like for gifts and personal use... simply include my copyright and contact information. Now, let's go take a look at some crafty crayon keepers that are also good for our environment!

Begin With Clay Pots
I Usually Purchase My Pots at Michael's or Wal-Mart

Use Recycled Pots For "Green Crafting"
Wash With Warm, Soapy Water & Let Dry Completely Before Painting
Assemble With E6000
Hot Glue Works Temporarily, but It Will NOT Create A Permanent Bond On Clay Pots!

E6000 Industrial Strength Glue
Glue Sets In About 30 Minutes
You Can Begin Working, But Handle With Care... Glue Will Be Fully Set After 24 Hours

Basecoat Earth, Grass and Sky
Use A Selection Of Stencils Or Draw Freehand
Use Painter's Tape Or Masking Tape
Basic Tomb Shapes
Basecoat Tomb
Add Darker Shades For Depth
"Pounce" Your Brush For A Stony Effect
Basecoat Palm Tree Trunks
Use Long Strokes For Palm Fronds
Add A Little Water To Your Paint Until It Reaches An Inky Consistency
Use Contrasting Colors, And Begin To Add More Layers Of Palm Fronds
I Started With Lime Green, Then Used Grass Green, & Finished With Black Green
Continue Painting Layers Until Your Trees Are As Full As You Like Them
Thin Your Paint With Floating Medium
Floating Medium
Pounce In Some Grass And Shrubs
Grass And Shrubs
Beautiful!
Add Baby Chicks & Some Homes In The Background
Add A Pond And Some Swans Or Geese
I Customized My Crayon Keeper With A Picture Of Clara
Feel Free To Paint Clara On Your Pots For Gift Giving Or Your Personal Use (c) All Rights Reserved
Seal With 2 - 3 Coats of Water Based Varnish
Allow Your Piece To Dry Completely Between Coats
Palm Tree Stencils
I Prefer Water Based Varnish For General Crafting
Ceramcoat Exterior/Interior Varnish 8 oz Gloss
Amazon Price: $11.40 (as of 02/23/2012)![]()
Clean up is quick and easy with water based supplies. Ceramcoat varnish has a nice consistency, is cost effective and provides the high gloss finish that I prefer for many of my projects.
Fill Your Crayon Keeper
Can You Believe It?

Yes, I nearly cried when this happened... but, did you notice that the base of the pot didn't break? I'm telling ya, that E6000 creates a bond that just won't quit!
Do You Think I Could Part With That Pot?
Just because it was broken? Nope, couldn't do it... so I simply re-purposed it!
Clara Recommends Mona Lisa
Mona Lisa Pink Soap 8 Oz.
Amazon Price: $3.96 (as of 02/23/2012)![]()
Artist's brushes can be expensive, so I highly recommend you treat them with tender loving care. Mona Lisa soap has a chemical composition that breaks down paint while it conditions the bristles of your brushes. Taking the time to clean your brushes thoroughly will help maximize your crafting budget!
Here's An Idea For Another "Green" Crayon Keeper
Yup, You Guessed It... It's A Potato Chip Can
Simply paint the can with acrylic paint and seal with water based varnish. The lid is a 2 1/2" clay pot, painted; sealed and hot glued to the lid of the can. Your kids will love to help you empty the cans so you can re-fill them with crayons or a variety of more art supplies!

- Love this idea. ...Thinking Plasti-dip paint could help make the pots not so easy to bust up all that beautiful hard work during normal use...Sad to see the floor drop...and thinking a round wooden ball might look great as another type of handle gripper...
