In the 1980's, Gilyard hit the big screen making his debut in Top Gun and later went on the The Karate Kid and Die Hard. He has also made a name for himself as a television actor on the series Matlock and as Chuck Norris's partner on Walker, Texas Ranger.

Clarence Darnell Gilyard, Jr. (born December 24, 1955) is a former American actor and current college professor who has featured in movies and television since 1980. He is sometimes credited as Clarence A. Gilyard. Gilyard is best-known for his roles as Andy Griffith's second private investigator and right-hand man, Conrad McMasters, on the 1980s legal drama series, Matlock (a role he played from 1989 to 1993), and as Chuck Norris's partner and best friend, Texas Ranger James "Jimmy" Trivette, on the 1990s crime drama, Walker, Texas Ranger.

Clarence Gilyard also had another military roll in the Karate Kid, starring Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita. In this film his character is titled G.I #1.While it was a small roll, it was in a big film and really helped to launch Gilyards career.

Clarence Gilyard In Die Hard
In 1988, Gilyard played the roll of Theo, a terrorist in the movie Die Hard.Again, it was not a starring character in the film, but he did have an important roll and several memorable quotes such as:
"[laughing as a LAPD SWAT armored vehicle is hit with a missile] Oh my God, the quarterback is TOAST!" and "[over the CB] All right, listen up guys. 'Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the house, not a creature was stirring, except for the four assholes coming in the rear in standard two-by-two cover formation."
