1942 Arcade Review
3 stars out of 5
Difficulty (3 out of 5 stars)
Gameplay (4 out of 5 stars)
Replayability (2 out of 5 stars)
1942 was one of the first top-down overhead airplane shooters. As the screen moves vertically, the enemy airplanes emerge from the top and bottom of the screen.
You are in the cockpit of a WWII fighter plane and you are surrounded by hordes enemy armfire.
The game does a very good job of keeping the pace strongly going. You really have to be on your toes when you play 1942. The screen is literally covered with dozens of things that would kill you.
There really isn't much on story or plot. The moment you put your quarter in, you know what you're going to get.
I don't know how much replayability 1942 has when you consider its gameplay. There really isn't much depth for after the first couple of times you play to make you keep coming back for more.
1942 is the kind of arcade game you'll have a lot of fun the first time you play it, then afterwards, you'll wonder what's the point of playing it again.

Aliens Arcade Game
4 stars out of 5
Difficulty (3 out of 5 stars)
Gameplay (4 out of 5 stars)
Replayability (3 out of 5 stars)
Aliens has to be one of the underrated arcade games to ever come out. Its a two player side scroller has player one as Ripley and player two as Hicks.
For the time, the graphics were incredible. Only costing 50 cents to play the game eats money however if you play defensively you can get far on two shiny quarters.
The game begins like the movie, the arrival of the marines on LV421. You encounter an alien infestation and thats when you begin to blow stuff up. At the end of each stage you fight huge aliens and all manner of different aliens.
The driving levels are where you are driving the battle van and then the infamous elevator shaft. Descending the levels of the complex, aliens jump down and after a while they snap each of the four cables.
The idea is to survive before the elevator falls and you reach the ground alive. But nothing beats the end, in which the Alien Queen where you fight in the forklift armor in the docking bay of the Colonial Marine mother ship. However the suit can only be worn for so long and the Queen can knock you out of it. So use it sparingly and rely on your weapons.
Newt runs around and this distracts you, she is just scenery for the level, she can't be injured so pay her no mind.
Once you've beaten the Queen you can lift her up and blow her out the airlock.

Altered Beast Arcade Review
4 stars out of 5
Difficulty (3 out of 5 stars)
Gameplay (4 out of 5 stars)
Replayability (3 out of 5 stars)

Altered Beast is a good example of an arcade game that borrowed heavily from Double Dragon (beatem-up co-op), but there was still enough of a twist to make the game memorable.
In Altered Beast, you go through most stages as men that can transform into beasts, by collecting power ups. The more power-ups you collect, the stronger the beast becomes.
There is quite a lot of originality in Altered Beast. The power ups help give the game an extra dimension. Not only are they important f you want to finish each level, but the moves and abilities that they give you are incredibly fun to do.
At each level, you wonder what exactly am I going to turn into? What kind of special skills will these beasts have?
Heck, this game is worth playing just for the scene in which the man transforms into a beast. It's this very dramatic cut scene, which was really slammin at the time. It got your blood going.

Asteroids Arcade Review
4 stars out of 5
Difficulty (3 out of 5 stars)
Gameplay (5 out of 5 stars)
Replayability (5 out of 5 stars)

One of the most classic arcade games of all time would have to be Asteroids.
The first ever version was released in 1979. Due to its huge popularity, it became one of the most influential arcade games to come out of the late 70s and early 80s.
Released by Atari, it was a vector-based game. Two players could play it at the same time.
Asteroids is said to be inspired from an earlier game called Spacewar.
The game was so popular that many arcade owners had to keep changing out the coin boxes that came with the game for larger coin boxes, just because the originals couldn't handle all the quarters.
It was also one of the first games ever that the player could put their initials on the on the list of high scores. Something we all take for granted now, but hey, it had to start somewhere.
The object of the Asteroids video game was to score as many points as you could by shooting down all the asteroids and flying saucers that were flying around you.
The spaceship that you controlled was able to rotate left or right and fire shots forward and also accelerate forward. The spaceship could also be sent into hyberspace which would cause it to disappear and reappear in a different are of the screen.
This is the kind of game that looks nothing short of prehistoric, by today's standards, however, Asteroids is one of those games that deserves a lot of credit for what it did for the entire arcade industry.

Bad Dudes Arcade Review
2 stars out of 5
Difficulty (2 out of 5 stars)
Gameplay (2 out of 5 stars)
Replayability (1 out of 5 stars)

Bad Dudes came in right after Double Dragon had engraved itself as an arcade smash hit. So needless to say every video game company must follow the same formula.
Well, Bad Dudes wasn't that great when a first came out and obviously it has not aged well. Even that name "Bad Dudes"???? This was during the 80s phase when skateboard talk was prevalent. I'm sure the next choice was "radical tubular guys."
Anyway, Bad Dudes tries to emulate Double Dragon in every way: 2 player co-op, fighting with karate moves, taking on street punks, etc...
Its completely uninspired and unoriginal. That being said, many games that are unoriginal can still be a lot of fun. This is not one of those kind of video games.
The controls aren't very intuitive. You really get no sense of accomplishment when beating a level. You just sort of feel like you're going through the motions. If all you can think about is picking up your dry-cleaning while you're playing a video game, then you know the game is not exactly enthralling, and that's the case with Bad Dudes.

Commando Arcade Review
3 stars out 5
Difficulty (3 out of 5 stars)
Gameplay (3 out of 5 stars)
Replayability (2 out of 5 stars)

I'll be the first one to tell you: If you're looking for depth in an arcade game, you probably have no interest in Commando. This is old-school mindless "shoot at anything that moves", so if that's not your cup of tea, then Commando is not for you.
Commando is basically a top-down where you are are thrown in a middle of the jungle and you got to kill all the bad guys with unlimited bullets and hand grenades.
I know...I know....the concept is exactly earth shattering, but I think Commando seems to pull it off fairly well. The top-down shooting genre was fairly popular in the 80s, and there was plenty of crappy games within that genre, but Commando is not one of them.
If there is one major knock on the game, is the sound and look of the bullets that Commando fires. I know this is the 80s, but come on!? They sound like a kid's toy and the look like tiny marshmallows.
But if you can overlook then Commando is a great way to spend a couple of hours to give your brain a rest.

Contra Arcade Review
4 stars out of 5
Difficulty (3 out of 5 stars)
Gameplay (4 out of 5 stars)
Replayability (5 out of 5 stars)
Its an age old debate of which Contra game was better: the arcade version or the NES? First off, they are both incredibly fun games. I think most people always pick the NES version. A lot of that has to do with the 30 live code that you get with the NES version. Somehow, I think if the arcade version had the same code, people would like the arcade version more.
You can play alone or co-op with another person. You play commandos in a side scroller shooter. You get more guns that you can shake a stick at. Everybody always argued on which person would get the spread shot gun.
The controls are smooth. You can jump, duck, and aim in eight directions. The bosses are intimidating but never frustrating.
The game is a must have for any arcade collector. Contra has always been and always be one of the most iconic games in video game history.

Donkey Kong Arcade Game
4 stars out of 5
Difficulty (4 out of 5 stars)
Gameplay (5 out of 5 stars)
Replayability (5 out of 5 stars)

Just the fact that the Donkey Kong arcade introduced the legendary video game icon Mario (then known as jump man) to the world makes it a classic. Well, that and its an incredibly simple, yet addictive game.
The story behind Donkey Kong is that he took Mario's girlfriend and imprissioned her at the top of every level. Your goal is get mario through these levels to rescue his girlfriend.
Donkey Kong epitomizes the platform genre. Come to think of it, I think this the "original platformer". This game is nothing but a run n jump gameplay which the platformer genre was based on.
The levels progress perfectly as far as difficulty is concerned. By the time you get to final levels those barrels seem to be coming in at breakneck speeds. If there is one knock on Donkey Kong it would have to be that when you beat the game, you get no great ending. What's up with that? You only go back to the original level. How did that one sneak past the developers? To beat Donkey Kong you had to be willing to put in the time to learn all the tricks of the game and its a shame you couldn't get a better payoff.
Other than that, Donkey Kong is a classic in every sense of the word.

Donkey Kong 3 Arcade Review
1 star out of 5
Difficulty (1 out of 5 stars)
Gameplay (1 out of 5 stars)
Replayability (1 out of 5 stars)
Question: How do you take one of most loved franchises in arcade history and run it into the ground? Answer: You make the train wreck that is Donkey Kong 3.
I know many of you might not have heard of this game, let alone played it. Well you can thank your lucky stars for that privilege.
I know it must sound exciting to hear about another Donkey Kong game. Believe me, I was in the same boat, but Donkey Kong 3 isn't a game, its an abomination. To get an idea of the cheapness of this game, Mario isn't even it! How does that grab you? A Donkey Kong game without Mario?!?!
Here is the idea behind it: You play some generic guy, named Stanley, who has to shoot bug spray up Donkey Kong's butt so he goes up a vine. In the mean time Donkey Kong throws bugs and flower pots at you.
There is a very good reason why you couldn't find this game in most arcades. I think quarters were repelled by this game. It is completely incoherent.
I have attached a video in the next module that shows the some of the gameplay from Donkey Kong 3. If you had the urge to try it out, this will hopefully kill that urge, just in case you didn't believe me.

Double Dragon Arcade Review
3 stars out of 5
Difficulty (2 out of 5 stars) Elbow! Elbow! Elbow!
Gameplay (4 out of 5 stars)
Replayability (4 out of 5 stars)
Double Dragon was my original arcade favorite (so this review my not be unbiased). I used to, quite frankly, rule at this game. It only took me a couple of tries until I was able to beat it with just one quarter. It wasn't much longer until I was able to beat it with just on life.
The game is so 80s that it should come with tickets to Bananarama. You play a street punk (the good kind) and you take on street punks (the bad kind) throughout the game. Its your basic side scrolling beat-em action game. Actually it might be considered the original that many others copied. Every character looked like 80s punks (torn jackets, torn jeans, etc%u2026)
There were three button and a joystick. The three buttons consisted of jump, kick, and punch. You can combine buttons to create different maneuvers. This is something we all take for granted, but back in 1987 that was a pretty wild idea. You could tell because every single beatem-up game copied that formula such as Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, and about a million other games.
You could play by yourself or with somebody. You really want to Double Dragon with a friend. Simply because, (I'm speaking from experience) if you played with somebody who didn't know what the were doing, that was going to be a wasted quarter. For example, if you were playing with a real jerk who wanted to fight with you instead of the bad guys, it would lead to some heated arguments.
But the key to this game was using the elbow. The elbow was unbeatable. You could basically go through the entire just using the elbow and no other fighting maneuvers. I know it doesn't sound like a lot of fun just hitting the same button over and over again, but guess what? I never got tired of it. Here I was. all of 8 years old and I always had a crowd surrounding me as I played. I was the king of that game.
For all the fans of the great action beatem-up that came during the 90s, you really should go back and try the original and pay your respects,

Top 10 Greatest Arcade Fighting Games
- Tekken - Arguably the best fighting game to come out in the last 15 years.
- Street Fighter II - You want to know how big this game was? People actually went home and studied the combinations to the fighting moves.
- Virtua Fighter - The thinking man's fighting game. Showed that button mashing wasn't going to get it done.
- Mortal Kombat - Very violent for its time. By today's standards it looks comical, but people went crazy about this game back in the day.
- Double Dragon - Just look at the previous Modules.
- Final Fight - Borrowed much of the gameplay from Double Dragon but took beatem up games to another level heading into the 90s
- Yie Ar Kung-Fu - A game that was WAY ahead of its time. Very simple by today's standards. But when it first came out you knew you were going to be waiting in line to play.
- Punch-Out - Wow! I miss playing this game. It was one of the first games I could remember playing where I tried to put a quarter in but it wouldn't go in because the machine was already full of quarters.
- Karate Champ - Who would ever though a fighting game would work with 2 joysticks and no buttons? It takes a while to get it used to it, but when you do, the game is killer!
- Renegade - Never fully got the credit it deserved. But if you compare apples to apples, the game is a blast.

Frogger Review
4 stars out of 5
Difficulty (4 out of 5 stars)
Gameplay (5 out of 5 stars)
Replayability (4 out of 5 stars)
Frogger personified much of the 80s arcade games: Simple yet addictive! Actually, next to Pacman and Space Invaders, Frogger might be the most copied game. It appeared on countless consoles and has been reinvented even in today's next-gen consoles.
A couple of things that made Frogger an instant hit was the simple gameplay and that unbelievably catchy music. First off, anyone can learn to play Frogger. It's difficulty level is set so anybody can beat the first couple levels and get comfortable playing it. The music just fits the game perfectly. The novelty of it all just seems to last and not get stale.
The plot (if you wan it call it that) is that you are a frog and you need to get home or pads. The frog has to cross a busy highway and then cross a treacherous river to get to his 5 pads. While the highway can be unsafe, it's a cakewalk compared to the river. In this part of the game, you must jump from log to log until you reach your pad. There are logs and turtles that you can jump on. But the turtles, can dive underwater and take you with them.
I think the sheer simplicity of the game is part of the reason why it has stayed so popular. From simple controls that anybody can pickup to the perfectly ramped up difficulty level to the addictive music, it will stay a classic for another 50 years. So for the person who wants just a fun game that only takes about ten minutes to play and even less time to learn, Frogger would be a great choice.

Golden Tee Golf is an arcade game that has slowly grown into a cultural phenomenon. It really isn't an arcade classic in the traditional sense. This has, and always will be, more popular at your local bar or pool hall than a traditional arcade.
Lets face it: 13 year old kids don't want to play video game golf. Also arcade games don't have a great history of golf games.
But if you can look past that, the game is incredible! There have been countless sequels to this franchise and every one of them is excellent, and this is coming from a person who would probably never play golf in real life.
The game uses a trackball for the golfer's swing. Fair warning! It does take a while to get used to the trackball. The moment you put your hand on it you're going to want to sling it. But doing that means your ball is probably going to end up somewhere in Argentina. Just take it nice and easy the first couple of swings and you'll get the feel. After all, nobody mastered Centipede the first time they touched the trackball.
Golden Tee Golf is also one of those games that can be an incredible investment, especially if you own a bar. Many bars have Golden Tee tournaments so you can imagine how much money can be pumped into the machine in a couple of hours.

House of the Dead Review
4 stars out of 5
Difficulty (3 out of 5 stars)
Gameplay (5 out of 5 stars)
Replayability (4 out of 5 stars)
House of the Dead was a monster hit in arcades in the mid 90s. Yes, I know that titles like sound like splatterpunk cult movies and I wouldn't mind betting that the game developers were on a diet of Hellraiser, Evil Dead, Slayer and Slipknot when they were designing these games.
The game is very well designed and operates around the premise of 'one man against the world'. This game is what's considered a rail shooter light game. You have to work out how much ammunition to use and which guns to choose from. The rest is point, shoot and large pools of blood.
So what is it about the Zombie genre in games and movies that fascinates us? Personally I think there is a perverse sense of romance at play with Zombies. Aside from the fact that Zombies are usually portrayed as sub human, with rotting flesh, poor maneuverability and a voracious appetite for fresh bodies, it is the idea that you have been lucky enough to escape the plague. You are 'the chosen one', the ultimate hero, the world is in your hands and you are the only remaining perfect specimen of human kind to restore the balance between good and evil. Fortunately there is usually a rather sexy female companion that pops up sooner or later.
It's the 28 Days scenario. It's the heroes journey, down into the underworld to seek atonement with the forces of evil and back up, emerging as victor, liberator. So there you have it, I think Zombie games are all about fulfilling your fantasies; not only do you get to prove your self worth, your integrity and your heroism but of course your reward is to go forth and proliferate the gene pool. In many ways it's a return to that image of the garden of Eden. What's your take on this whole Zombie thing?

Joust Arcade Review
4 stars out of 5
Difficulty (4 out of 5 stars)
Gameplay (4 out of 5 stars)
Replayability (4 out of 5 stars)
Joust is no doubt a classic arcade game. It was in just about every single arcade in the world throughout the 1980s.
I'll be the first to tell you that its not much to look at as far as graphics are concerned, but thats the case with most arcade games from that era.
Joust is a very simple one-button joystick game. You ride on this birds (I believe their ostriches) and the key is to jump on top your enemies to defeat them. The enemies drop the eggs and you have to go pick them up to score points. Very simple and effective gameplay.
The real fun of the game is when you play co-op with a friend. He might not stay your friend very long as its very easy to turn the game into a shouting match. What happens is someone will always accidently jump on top of your friend's ostrich and kill them. It happens every single time. There isn't a whole lot of room of the screen so it's going to eventually happen.
After it does, you'll no longer be playing against the enemies you'll be trying to kill each other. It's not the way the game was intended to be played but its fun nevertheless.

NBA Jam Arcade Game
4 stars out of 5
Difficulty (3 out of 5 stars)
Gameplay (5 out of 5 stars)
Replayability (3 out of 5 stars)

NBA Jam was the first honest to goodness over-the-top arcade sports game that became a hit.
Sports video games, prior to NBA, Jam were never the most popular genre in the arcades. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that you got to keep putting quarters in after every quarter to finish the game. A sneaky move by game developers.
But due to its incredibly addictive gameplay, fans plugged quarters into NBA Jam like it was a slot machine.
NBA tore the roof off basketball video game, literally. Players could jump so high they'd go off the screen. No fouls, no rules (except for goaltending) anything goes!
Great commentary such boomshakalaka(sp?) after making a spectacular dunk never got old. And of course, who could forget when a player got on fire? Whenever you make 3 baskets in a row without missing and hold the opposing team to no baskets on those 3 trips you're player go on fire. That means Literally he could take a shot from anywhere on the court and he'll probably make it. You could have Dikemebe Mutombo out there making half court shots, when he's on fire.
I think NBA Jam holds up incredibly well even to this day. You may find more realistic basketball games, but I doubt you'll find a more fund basketball game.

NFL Blitz Arcade

NFL Blitz is exactly what you want from an arcade football game. There aren't a million plays to remember or incredible nuances of the NFL like John Madden Football. But thats the greatness of the game. If you're interested in the simulated version of football go get Madden, you'll be alot of happier.
If you want over the top gameplay, unrealistic hits, a quarterback who can throw a football 100 yards, backflips into the end zone, ....well you get the idea.
The game is just pure fun. You don't even have to be a football fan to be a fan of NFL Blitz. A child whose never played a video nor watched a football game could understand the controls within 5 minutes.
You also get the real players from the NFL and the developers did a really good job with their skills and attributes. Of course they are extremely inflated, but it fits perfectly with the style of gameplay.
NFL Blitz is the kind of arcade game that was just made for a dorm room or a Fraternity house. It really does market itself to the college crowd.

Outrun Arcade Game Review

What in the world would Arcade racing game be without Outrun?
It seems like 99.9% of racing video games try to be all about speed. There is always a some kind of traffic to simulate racing conditions. They try to make you feel like you're in the Daytona 500. And there is nothing wrong with this.
But why is it that developer can't think outside the box like they did with Outrun. Here is a racing game that somehow feels like you're taking a stroll down the beautiful countryside. Most racing games make you want to grip the steering wheel so tight you feel like you are going to break it.
Outrun always had such a relaxed feel to it. You have the driver with his arm around his girlfriend in his sports car. How chilled out is that? Not to mention the music just wanted to make me drop what I was doing and fly the nearest beach.
It was also one of the first racing games that I can remember which got you closer to the car's perspective. For most racing games, prior to Outrun, they had a top-down perspective. With Outrun, you felt like you were closer to the ground and it really helped you sense every turn that was coming up.
I think the game can still hold up to any racing game that's being made today.

Pac Man Coctail Table Review
4 stars out of 5
Difficulty (3 out of 5 stars)
Gameplay (5 out of 5 stars)
Replayability (5 out of 5 stars)
Everybody always thinks of Pac-Man as THE most important arcade game, and arguably it is. However nobody ever thinks of the old table style Pac-man that you could usually find at Pizza Hut when I was a kid.
We would go to the Pizza Hut buffet and after I ate mom would give my brother and I a couple quarters and we would take turns playing Pac Man on the trackball style movements, and we would actually turn those 2 quarters into 30 minutes of entertainment, which also gave our parents time to wind down.
If there was a game that was perfectly suited for the cocktail table it was Pac-man. The game was never about having an intense, hyperactive gaming experience. That's what made it perfect for the table. You're sitting down having a pizza and soda to the left and right of you. Everytime you'd finish a level, you'd have time take a bite or a sip.
Unfortunately, for better or worse, with today's arcade games, the content and tone do not correspond to a person casually sitting down and playing. The cocktail table Pac-Man game really is an iconic piece of gaming.

Popeye Arcade Review

Difficulty (2 out of 5 stars)
Gameplay (2 out of 5 stars)
Replayability (1 out of 5 stars)

You know, there are some video games that are regarded as classic or semi-classic by the masses, that make me go "hmm, really THAT game?" Popeye is one of those video games for me.
The gist of Popeye is that Olive Oil throws at the top of the screen and you have to catch them before they go all the way down the screen into the lake. If you catch all of them, you advance to the next level. Sounds thrilling, doesn't it?
In the meantime you have to worry about Brutus and you can only defeat him when you've eaten your spinach. Off subject, how much did spinach sales increase, when the original Popeye cartoon came out?
Anyway, Popeye is a very uninspiring arcade game that doesn't do much to hold the gamer's attention. The novelty is fun for maybe 30 minutes, but it wears a little thin after that. There is nothing in the game that makes the player sacrifice another quarter to see if he/she can get to the next level.

An arcade game that brings back a lot of memories for me is Pole Position. When I was young, I remember going to showbiz pizza (now chuck-e-cheese) and heading straight for that game.
I think a big reason why I loved it so much was just the physical experience. This wasn't a stand up game. You sat in a little box, and you were kind of in your own little world. I thought that, in that little world, I was the world's best driver and that no-one could catch me.
It made no difference that I kept running into signs and going off the road and such. I really loved that game.
In retrospect, the graphics were extremely simple. The concept was easy and there was not much difference in the multiple tracks available. I just know I felt really cool when I moved that gear shift know from low to high. I even loved the TV show, that no-one seems to remember.
Pole Position was definitely one of a kind for its time. You have to be lucky to be able find it nowadays. If you do ever get one, make sure there in enough room to put it in, If at all possible try to pick it up yourself. The cost of shipping alone might be more than that game.

Rampage Arcade Review
4 stars out of 5
Difficulty (3 out of 5 stars)
Gameplay (4 out of 5 stars)
Replayability (3 out of 5 stars)

For fun, mindless entertainment, I don't think it gets any better than the Rampage Arcade game.
Its a great idea with simple gameplay that any kid, who made lego buildings just to destroy them would understand.
Destroy everything you can! That's the name of the game. You get to choose between three Godzilla-King Kong mutant like creatures and the one who destroys the most property and eats the most people (don't worry it's not too graphic) scores the most points and wins.
If you're looking for some deep, under the surface, subtle storyline, um...well....there isn't. The game wasn't directed by Peter Jackson.
But I will say its still as much to fun to play Rampage even after all these years. Sure, the game doesn't hold up as well as it once did, but the enjoyment is undeniable.
You can't help but enjoy destroying a perfectly good city and then they just bring you a brand new city to destroy. New building and skyscrapers to tantalize that destructive need a human has. Hmm....never thought of it like that. Maybe Rampage is somewhat theraputic. Well....Maybe not.

R-Type Arcade Review
4 stars out of 5
Difficulty (4 out of 5 stars)
Gameplay (4 out of 5 stars)
Replayability (4 out of 5 stars)

First off R-Type (especially considering when it came out) has got to be one of the most graphically beautiful games I have ever seem. It almost looked like a moving painting. This was one of the first arcade games I remember where there were groups people who just sat and watched the player playing. Not because they were waiting in line to play. The just wanted to see the R-Type. It really does have a hypnotic look to it.
The screen scrolls horizontally from left to right. You should down enemy aircraft in the form of robots and other monsters. Not necessarily original, but you don't have to reinvent the wheel to make a great game.
The difficulty level is great, as it challenges the player, yet doesn't feel impossible to beat.
With most shooters of this type, there is generally not a whole lot of replay value. That's not the case with R-Type. There is actually some strategy involved in the game. It isn't just mindless button mashing. A lot of the game involves timing and execution.
It was a game that was way ahead of its time.

The Simpsons Arcade Game Review
3 stars out of 5
Difficulty (2 out of 5 stars)
Gameplay (4 out of 5 stars)
Replayability (3 out of 5 stars)
It took forever for The Simpsons franchise to come up with a good video game for the consoles. However, they did it fairly quickly for the arcade.
If you're a fan, as I am, of The Simpsons, the first thing you can't help but notice in this game is they bring out all the characters. Now, I just don't mean the regulars, I'm talking you'll just about every single character, no matter how vague. This was made when the show was just starting so you're not going to see any characters post 1992.
You get to play as either Bart, Homer, Marge, or Lisa. Homer uses his fist, Marge uses her vacuum cleaner, Bat uses his skateboard, and Lisa uses her jump rope. When you played the four-player arcade version, you could play them all simultaneously with friends. It was so much fun. There was so much activity on the screen it was hard to stay focused. Also no matter how strange it is to see Marge hitting people with a vacuum cleaner, the image is oddly compelling.
The developers packed a ton of levels. Each level is obviously progressively tougher. There are quite a few mini-games in between the levels, which consist of serious button mashing.
However, the game never really gets stale. There are always new things to pick up and throw, characters making a cameo, and enough surprises to make you want start from scratch again.
Just due to the sheer amount of levels the game has, it is going to take you a while to beat it. But there is enough variety to keep you focused on the end.

Soul Calibur Arcade Review
4 stars out of 5
Difficulty (3 out of 5 stars)
Gameplay (4 out of 5 stars)
Replayability (4 out of 5 stars)

A video game that translated well from the arcades to the home consoles is Soul Calibur. This was the Street Fighter of its generation.
There are several characters to choose from, and they all have different weapons and use many different combinations of fighting technique. (No two character have the same or similar fightng styles). The game can either be played in one or two player mode, both are exciting and fun; but having a challenge always makes everything more interesting.
From landscapes around the world to skyscrapper rooftops (where you want to stay away from the edge) their are several different combat arenas to choose from, this game never gets old now matter how many times you play it. The realism of the characters movement and familiarity with their weapons, seems incredibly real, battling with swords, spears, daggers, and bamboo sticks.
And the martial arts displayed are nothing short of mind boobling; flying, floating, spinning, twirling kicks/punchs and knees/elbows combinations are combined to create awing effects; combat skill merges with the use of weapon and enemies are immobilized with pure agility determination skill and power. It's like watching a classic asian martial arts film.
Fighting with each character is extremely different leaving little to be desired each time you play, due to the patience technique and mental skill it takes to master the game. Soul Calibur is addictive, exciting, fun and mind stimulating all at the same time. What more could you ask for?

- That's some great info on arcade games. I'm a big fan of the older arcade games as well. I hate to think of how many quarters I blew during my teenage years in those places. Great fun though. I've been on the lookout for new games that embody that old arcade style. I found a few new, but classic arcade games and wrote about them on my blog. Feel free to check them out.
