Classic Books for Homeschoolers

Ranked #17,906 in Books, Poetry & Writing, #787,710 overall | Donates to First Book

For Grade 3-6

Homeschooling can carry any price tag, great or small it's up to you. We had been using a complete curriculum but a "restructuring" of the family (ie; I'm now single) created a finance restructuring that gave me no choice but to restructure our curriculum and take advantage of the resources available to me online, in the library and local used book stores. This is a list of the current books we own, and the books I intend to purchase or borrow in the future. I'm not anti fairy tale, but I do look for books that are relatively realistic, with morals and that are witch and evil ogre free for educational reading. Talking Animals are accepted though!

How we use the books....

There are several ways to use the books. The easiest is to have the child read a chapter and have the child write a three point summary in a work book we call a reading journal, for you to prove they read and have an understanding of the chapter. If you read the book ahead of them, you can write down some questions for them to answer either orally or written in their reading journals. Another activity is to draw a picture of events or Characters in the books and name the picture.
A lot (ok i'll face it, probably ALL) of these books have movies based off of them. If your child hasn't seen it...DON'T! at least not until they have read the book. Then watch the movie together as a family activity and talk afterward about how the movie was different from the book, or how the movie provided an image different than what they thought when they read it.
If you aren't the creative type, there are several sources of activities available for these books on the web. A few are listed at the end of this lens. My Plan is to have the children read 3 of these books/year and complete the language lesson books as suggested in it's forward over the 4 years.

Our Reader

This is our reader of Classic literature, poetry and mythology. See my links at the bottom for an amazing student resource. Choose the large Book of virtues book to read to your children, or the simplified version for your children to read for themselves. I own both. These stories are categorized by character building pillars.

Ok, so this one breaks my rule about ogres. BUT I choose it because it's about almost teen children remembering the value of imagination, and learning the value of platonic friendship and the sad reality of loss.

Activity and Reading Guides

A majority of these books have online FREE study guides and activities. A simple GOOGLE search of your title with free beside it will open up a world of information to you. I'll help you out with a couple of my favorites.
Charlottes Web Student Guide
By Walden this guide corresponds with the book
Little House In the Big Woods activities by chapter
Ok, I'm taking some of the credit for this site. Some friends and I decided to read through the series and come up with things to do for each chapter. Big woods is finished but only about half of the Prairie is done.
Stuart Little Student Guide
Put out by Language play house, although not chapter by chapter is covers the themes of the story
All-of-a-kind Family Sudent Guide
A book about a Jewish family, this download from Jewish libraries takes you into their culture.
Book of Virtues
TOTALLY AMAZING download for Book of Virtue activities. By another home school mom this is an amazing resource. This link takes you to a download page, but the links are actually on the left hand side n the column, not in the main body of the page.

So.....What books would you add to the list?
