The History of Hot Rods

Hot rods themselves began surfacing just before the start of World War II and progressed into becoming more popular in the 1950s

The history of hot rods has been a topic among collectors as long as there have been hot rods around. Custom cars began before the start of World War I, in America as well as Europe. Hot rods themselves began surfacing just before the start of World War II and progressed into becoming more popular in the 1950s, but actually the history of them can go back as far as 1930s in Southern California. People would race their hot rods in the empty dry lake beds just outside of Los Angeles, under the rules of the Southern California Timing Association. After World War II, the activity blossomed into an activity among people all over. The cars were modified to lessen the weight and increase the powers of the motors, the most popular the Ford. Things like the convertible tops, hoods, trunk lids and such were often removed and as much glass was as well a lot of the times. Custom "chop" modifications were done to make the cars more aerodynamic. These modifications lead to the beginning of car shows so the racers and collectors could show off their prized cars in the 1960's.

Throttle Magazine

1941, with the U.S. getting pulled into World War II, hot rodding would have to be put on hold.

In 1941, a monthly publication called Throttle Magazine was designed to show track racing results, showing off some of the better cars, and also reporting on new safety and speed issues. But in 1941, with the U.S. getting pulled into World War II, hot rodding would have to be put on hold. But hot rods history shows that at the end of the World War II, many small military airports throughout the country that were no longer being used or abandoned started allowing hot rodders to race on the runways. With the hot rodding gaining popularity, many magazines and associations catering to Hot Rodders started and an organization was needed to promote the images of Hot Rodders.

Automakers to offer safety and fuel efficiency

The older classics will never die out as being the most popular hot rods there ever was and ever will be

Soon the major car makers were building cars that would out perform any hot rod, the need for custom built hot rods began to die out. But, the 1973 Oil Crisis called on automakers to offer safety and fuel efficiency over performance. This obviously led to the interest in hot rods again. The desire to have the fastest car, the best looking car, of course the most outstanding car over all has brought us to the modern day hot rods, race cars, and custom cars all over the world. But the older classics will never die out as being the most popular hot rods there ever was and ever will be. They were build solid and drove hard, giving the drivers and the spectators a thrill like none other. If you have never been to a classic car show and gazed upon the amazing shine of a hot rod, you do not know what you are missing. To see those amazing paint jobs reflect the sun and seeing yourself in that reflection, you haven't lived life. So check out to see when the next car show is coming to your area and gather up the kiddos for a day of amazement. Most all car shows offer food booths and other activities too for children of all ages to enjoy.

Rats and Trads

Study this crazy hobby for more than a minute and already its heading in a band new direction.

Here is the great thing about hot rodding. Just try and define it. Study this crazy hobby for more than a minute and already its heading in a band new direction. That's the major part of rodding's appeal. The relative lack of boundaries. We can say this thing of ours involves fun with internal combustion in some forum, combined with a big helping of individual expression. Beyond that hot rodding has always defied definition. What are hot rods? Machines built by hot rodders. Who are hot rodders? The people that build hot rods. While it's possible to construct more complicated definitions that is pretty much the long and the short of it.

Traditional

Thad rod can be period originals, restorations.or brand new builds

A trad or a traditional rod is built to rigorous historical standards. The ideal trad rod might be a 40 or 50 year old hot rod barn find second best would be a very accurate replica. Thad rod can be period originals, restorations.or brand new builds, but the most important consideration is historical accuracy. The car most be faithful to the period in hot rodding it represents. Ok for example, a trad rod build for a late 50's look would not include billet wheels or a megawatt audio system

Trad rod builders

Vintage speed equipment for their rods which can really put a big dent in your wallet

. Trad rod builders search the country and scour the Internet looking for authentic sheet-metal and vintage speed equipment for their rods which can really put a big dent in your wallet. You can go out and buy reproduction parts for a lot of the builds trad rodders want the real deal down to the smallest detail.

The Rat Rod

It%u2019s not intended to capture the precise look and detail.

The rat rod is much more fun to build. It's not intended to capture the precise look and detail of an early hot rod so much as the flavor and the experience of early rodding.

Rat Rodders

Rat rodders take the approach that hot rodding

Rat rodders take the approach that hot rodding was originally performed with junkyard parts. But since the original parts from the first generation have become so rare and expensive, rat rodders allow themselves more license.

Old and Funky

They mite run across a front end of a tractor from the same era.

They use whatever they can find in the junk pile as long as the parts is close to the same year or era that they are looking for. They mite run across a front end of a tractor from the same era and the rod they are building it mite be a good chance it will end up on the rat rod Stuff like that is what makes a ratrod old and funky looking.Just like the front end on this rat rod the front end came off of a old case tractor and it works great

Pictures of RatRods

There are some great looking rides in here

Here are some really great pictures of Rat Rods. There are some great looking rides in here this will give you a pretty good idea of the kind of work that goes into building a rat rod

Rat Rod from a Trad

You are going to see on a rat rod or on the inside of one

One way to tell a rat rod from a trad or traditional build up is you never know what you are going to see on a rat rod or on the inside of one

A Pure Rat Rod

. Danger is a big part of rat rod aesthetic.

This is a pure rat rod the back half is off a Model A sedan body channeled low over the frame with a radically bulldogged front axle assembly. If it looks scary there is a good chance it supposed to. Danger is a big part of rat rod aesthetic.

My cousins used to customize 1940s coupes into street rods. I loved it when they came by and took us for a ride in their hot rods. I owned a couple of 57 Chevy models in the 1960s and wish I had those cars today. The new cars just don't compare to the classics and old pre-WWII machines.

My best friend, many years ago, had a chopped candy apple red 36 Ford. What a beautiful car - especially all of the chrome on the engine. Thanks for a great lens.
