Start Your Children Reading at and Early Age

I have a brother who is two years older than I am. During his first years in school, he began to come home from school and eagerly teach me how to read while he was learning that skill in school. By the time I entered kindergarten, I was already reading at a first grade level.

My reading skill gave me a huge head start in my learning process. I started out well advanced compared to most of my peers. My reading skills helped me to succeed early on, and throughout my schooling process.

J.K. Rowling's greatest achievement was creating a book series that young people found to be fun, captivating, and interesting to read. Though I'm not profoundly excited about the topic of her books, I am pleased that they have inspired so many youth to open books and read.

Throughout my early years and through my children's pre-school days, I became fascinated with several books that I consider to be classics. These books have drawn young children to become interesting in reading for many, many years.

Dick, Jane, and Sally

Throughout the years, most of us have learned to read by sounding out the letters that create the words. This system, called "phonics" became very popular in the 1990's with the "Hooked on Phonics" system.

In my day, "Dick and Jane" books were the intro to the phonics style of learning.

Dick and Jane stories were fun and interesting to read because they were "regular kids" involved in "regular kid" activities. They played games, rolled around with their pets, visited grandparents on the farm, dressed up in their parents' clothes, and many other things that children did back then and still do today. Most children relate very well to the characters in the books and could picture themselves in the stories.

The illustrators used photos of actual children playing to render the artwork for the books. Throughout the years that the books were written, the clothing styles changed regularly so they monitored the current Sears catalog to dress the children in appropriate fashions.

From the earliest Dick and Jane books, such as "We Look and See", "We Come and Go", and "We Work and Play" to the later works, like "Fun Wherever We Are", "Fun With Our Family", and "Fun With Our Friends", Dick, Jane, Sally, Spot, Puff, and Tim are a part of our lives.

Classic "Dick and Jane" Children's Books

Classic Dr Seuss Children's Books

Oh, the imagination that Theodore Geisel must have had to be able to concoct the colorful characters and playful rhyme in his classic Dr Seuss books. Though he was an advertising illustrator by trade, he published 44 books under the pen name of Dr Seuss. Many of those books were adapted to television, the big screen, and even a broadway musical.

I'm not embarrassed in the slightest to admit that even though I am old enough to have married children who could soon bring me grandchildren, I can still sit and read through a Dr Seuss Book......and enjoy it. I think "The Cat in the Hat Comes Back" was always one of my favorites, followed by "How the Grinch Stole Christmas", and "Green Eggs and Ham".

I'm sure that I watch the Jim Carrey version of "How the Grinch Stole Christmas"
every year, without fail.

Little Golden Books

Since 1942, hundreds of popular children's books have been published as "Little Golden Books". Originally, these books sold for twenty-five cents each. By the time fifty years had passed, they had sold over a billion and a half books.

Their team of writers produced original works such as "The Poky Little Puppy" and "The Tawny Scrawny Lion". They also featured popular children's media icons, such as, Disney, Muppets, Barbie, and others. Also, popular characters like Captain Kangaroo, Lassie, Mister Rogers, and many others have been featured in their books.

I remember having Little Golden Books at home while I was growing up. The titles that I remember most fondly are "The Tawney Scrawny Lion", "Little Black Sambo", "Scuffy the Tugboat", "The Little Red Caboose", along with many of the Disney titles.

Great selection of all time favorite children's books. My earliest memory of books was Dick, Jane and Spot, but I love reading Dr. Seuss to my grandkids. I just might enjoy them more than the kids do.

There are a lot of great new children's books, but I still love the classics. I taught my kids to read with Dr. Seuss.

Sweet memories here of learning to read with Dick, Jane, Sally and Spot and we sure did have many of The Little Golden Books.
