Classic Christmas Music And Television

A Glimpse At My Holiday Music/TV Obsessions

I am a huge fan of both Christmas music and Christmas specials seen on television. It is a guilty pleasure I enjoy. While many people are fans of Christmas movies made for television featured on the Hallmark Channel, I am a fan of more childish pursuits of Christmas entertainment. Here is a look at some of my favorite examples of Christmas music and Christmas programs on television.

ABC Family's 25 Days Of Christmas

ABC Family's 25 Days Of Christmas official logoForget the 12 Days Of Christmas. The only countdown related to Christmas that matters is ABC Family's 25 Days Of Christmas annual programming block in December. It isn't just about airing a ton of well-loved Rankin/Bass Christmas specials, but also a number of original Christmas films, classic Christmas movies, the Harry Potter films and a bunch of Pixar films. Whew!

In fact, 25 Days Of Christmas is so popular with viewers, a few years ago ABC Family added a Countdown To 25 Days Of Christmas to their lineup, with Christmas programming starting on November 20th!

Rankin/Bass Christmas Specials

DVD Package For Rankin/Bass Classic, Rudolph The Red-Nosed ReindeerRankin/Bass Christmas Specials are the best part of ABC Family's 25 Days Of Christmas schedule without a doubt. There are so many classic Christmas television specials that were produced by the Rankin/Bass studios starting from the 60s, and just about all of them are aired annually somewhere on network TV or cable television.

A Christmas Carol

Poster art for The Muppet Christmas CarolIt is fair to say that Charles Dickens story, "A Christmas Carol" has been adapted by numerous people for the big and little screen. There have been many versions of "A Christmas Carol" that I've loved. I wanted to share the adaptations of "A Christmas Carol" I've enjoyed with you.

Underappreciated Christmas Specials

Screenshot of Pee-Wee's Playhouse Christmas SpecialBeing the nerd I am about Christmas television specials, I had little difficulty compiling a list of under-appreciated Christmas specials. These are specials that historically have been forgotten by television programming executives and left off the lists of Christmas specials aired on TV. I was pleasantly surprised to see "Olive, The Other Reindeer" air this year on the CW. Maybe there is hope I will one day see "A Pinky & The Brain Christmas" on television during the holiday season.

Muppet Christmas Specials

DVD Cover For A Muppet Family ChristmasI had no idea just how many Muppet Christmas Specials there were until I decided to show off my love towards Jim Henson's Muppets by compiling a list of all of them. My all-time favorite is easily "A Muppet Family Christmas" because it was the first time all the Muppets from all of the shows featuring Muppets appeared together.

Muppet Christmas Songs

Songs From Christmas Specials That Aren't Christmas Songs

Screenshot from Emmet Otter's Jug Band ChristmasThere are tons of great songs from Christmas specials that aren't Christmas songs, and it is a shame that we need to wait until these Christmas specials air until we can enjoy these songs without feeling weird about the fact these songs are featured in Christmas specials or Christmas films.

Baby, It's Cold Outside

It's not really a Christmas song, but when's the last time you heard a radio station play this song in August? Take a listen and see if you agree with My Favorite Versions of Baby, It's Cold Outside.
