Clue Games - New Variations of the Classic Clue Board Game

The most well-known version of the Clue games is the classic Clue game, not much changed from the version created in 1949. Cluedo is a great mystery detective board game a classic whodunit game!

In my other lenses I have written about this classic Clue version, the game play, the characters, rooms and weapons, and how to play Cluedo. In this lens I wanted to write about a couple new versions of the board game.

If you are feeling nostalgic and want to play Clue but got no-one to play with, you can now also play Clue classic on you computer, for details, visit: Clue Computer Game Reviews.

The Simpsons Clue Games

There have already been a few versions of the Simpsons Clue game. The latest one is the 3rd edition (October 2007).

Unlike other Clue games variations, the Simpsons Clue 3rd ed. sticks to the same rules and game play as the classic Clue. And with my favorite characters such as Homer and Bart, this is a very funny and appealing version.

"Reporting live" Kent Brockman sets the scene for the game: It's the opening night of the Natural History Museum in Springfield, and Mr. Burns has been murdered. His body has been found in the rib cage of a dinosaur skeleton. It's a race to find out who done in Mr. Burns' (again!). And the usual suspects are played (in the appropriate Clue Character costumes!) by:

Bart Simpson as Col. Mustard, Marge Simpson as Mrs. White, Fat Tony as Mr. Green, Edna Krabappel as Miss Scarlet, Lisa Simpson as Mrs. Peacock and Homer Simpson as Prof. Plum.

The rooms to investigate are: Great Inventions Room, Greek Room, Animal Diorama Room, Springfield History Room, Jewel Room, Medieval History Room, Egyptian Room, Early Man Room, and Dinosaur Room.

And the possible weapons are: Greek Bust, Spear, Tarantula, Cobra, Bone and Mace.

The game play is basically the same as the traditional game, for a summary of the rules checkout my other lenses. This Clue game uses the reliable starting place of the great original boardgame and turns it into a very entertaining version, including the subtle humour that makes the Simpsons so popular. The detail of the game including the eye-catching artwork of the board calls for hours of fun and laughs!

Harry Potter Version of the Clue Games

Another Clue game adaptation using modern pop-culture is the Harry Potter Clue Game. This version has some great new deviations from the original Clue games. In this Clue game one of the Hogwarts students has gone missing, the aim find which of the bad guys is behind it and what spell/magical item they used.

The cards and items in this Potter/Clue game include:
Player cards: Longbottom, G. Weasley, Potter, Granger, R. Weasley and Lovegood. One of these will be chosen as the victim at the beginning of the game

Suspect cards: Pettigrew, Lestrange, D. Malfoy, Crabbe & Goyle, L. Malfoy and Umbridge

Spell/Magical weapons: Vanishing Cabinet, Portkey, Impedimenta, Sleeping Draught, Petrificus Totalus and Mandrake

Room cards: Defense Against Dark Arts, Great Hall, Hospital Wing, Room of Requirement, Potions Classroom, Trophy Room, Divination Classroom, Owlery, Library

Ally cards: Snape, Hagrid, Dumbledore, Dobby, Fawkes, Pomfrey, McGonagall and the Weasley Twins

Help items: Bezoar, Marauder's Map, Portkey, Felix Felicis, Broom, Dark Detector, Deluminator, Gillyweed, Invisibility Cloak, Mandrake Antidote.

Helpful Spells: Immobilus, Lumos/Lumos Solem, Expelliarmus, Perificus Totalus, Protego, Riddikulus, Stupefy, Wingardium Leviosa, Alohomora

The Dark Deck or Obstacles: are a number of ways that you can be hindered and lose house points. You can avoid this if you hold specified help cards.

Which Clue Board Games to Play?

Harry Potter fans will love this game with its attention to the detail of JKR's books. However, as it is more complicated and involved than the old Clue games, it may not be quite as much fun or appealing for Cluedo traditionalists!

Fans of the Simpsons and Clue games may prefer the Simpsons Clue game as it sticks more to the original game play.
