I quite do think so--and think this is a wonderful, creative lens, that also brings back many fond memories. One that was an absolute family and classroom favorite was Silverstein's "Crowded Tub:" There are too many kids in this tub
There are too many elbows to scrub
I just washed a behind that I'm sure wasn't mine
There are too many kids in this tub.

Wow, I wish I had a list like this when I was growing up. Will definitely share these with my children! Thanks a bunch!
  • YayasHome Feb 8, 2012 @ 6:27 pm | delete
I think classic funny poems for kids is a perfect way to engage children in a life-long love for poetry. In fact, I feel that any time we can make a child smile or laugh when teaching is involved, the lesson is more solidly learned. It is my opinion that laughter an' music are supreme keys to solidifying any important message. This page is an excellent example of subtle warnings to children surrounded by entertainment. Who wouldn't prefer learning by the use of music an' humor, as opposed to droll warnings, right?

Thank you so much for visiting my Children Afflicted With Autism an' Writer's Block pages an' Blessing them. I so appreciate your encouragement. Thank you.

Oh, yes of course they do. Children love to laugh, and they love to laugh with us. Silly rhymes and funny twists not only cheer them, but help those synapses grow ever more complex networks, especially the language ones. Thank you so much for this lens. I'm really sorry the "Favorite" button has gone away. I'd like a way to find it easily again right here on Squidoo.

I tend to like children's poetry much better than poems intended for adults (which I guess says something about me ... though I'm not sure what). These poems were so much fun to read, and I especially like "The Naming of Cats" by T.S. Elliot, which I know all of the words to because it was in Cats, the musical. I'll lensroll this to my Poetry by Ramkitten lens.

I loved the Yak! I drove everybody crazy chanting it incessantly - until I started school and the infant teacher managed to persuade me to stop - by introducing me to the Jumblies. But I still like the Yak, what I can remember of it :). "Then tell your papa where the Yak can be got, and if he is awfully rich, he will buy you the creature - or else he will not. (I cannot be positive which.)

What a GREAT lens! I had no idea T.S. Elliot wrote a book which ended up being the lyrics for Cats! I know T.S. for his Four Quartets and such, but not for Cats ! This will blow my husband away!

Hi, I'm Tipi's sister and followed your squidoo trail home all the way to South England! You have such fun here! I was a reading fluency tutor in a public school for two years and learned from a kindergarten teacher that learning to rhyme is vital for students reading skill development.
I'm not a squidoo member, so all I can give you is a pat on the back and 'well done'.

I really enjoyed this! Just my kinds of poems. I guess that means I'm still a kid at heart at (almost) 40. Great lens, as always.

It's interesting that the culture thing shines through-I wasn't familiar with many of yours, and wonder if it's because you're in Great Britain. Do add Shel Silverstein to your list, though-my girls LOVE his poems....

As I was going up the stair,
    I met a man who wasn't there.
    He wasn't there again today.
    I wish, I wish he'd stay away!

What a great idea! I'll have to mark some books to look into when my boys get older - they still don't quite get even Mother Goose. :)

Fantastic lens! A walk down memory lane.... these are some of my favorites from when I was little. I remember my grandmother reading me Kipling when I would visit her. She always made it so much fun! So many of these books grace my own shelves, yet my own children seem to go in for the poetry that is much more nonsensical. Ah well, at least they have a love for words and books!

I have to say that I am a big Shel Silverstein fan myself. :D

Lovely - I read The Jumblies to my girls not very long ago. Another set of poems they just love is Roald Dahl's Revolting Rhymes. During a Literacy Week at their school I read his poem on "Cinderella" dressed up as The Wicked Stepmother to about 6 groups of 30 children - they loved it.
