Classic Genesis game: Gunstar Heroes

Ranked #7,570 in Games, #353,259 overall

Multiplayer Goodness!

It's 2012, and I still consider this game one of my favorite multiplayers of all time. Maybe it's because I grew up with it! Maybe my opinion is incredibly biased, but... I've certainly had some good memories playing this game and games like it with a friend who could share the passion of yelling at the screen in defiance of our video game failures.

It's games like these that make your whole friendship better. The silly things you can waste time on, working together to conquer a common goal, no matter how silly it is... it's a great way to bond in general. But back then, before PC games and the whole competitive/cooperative scene, there were games like Gunstar Heroes to put a smile on your face.

Gameplay

From the beginning, you're tossed into a colorful little world with all sorts of stuff going on. You've got guns so strong even the trees get knocked around! Not normal guns, but elemental guns, right? Bear with me! You can have two elements on at once, between fire/electric/wind (chaser)/and "force". Now, let's say you have two Fire elements on, right? Your gun shoots huge fireballs which explode once you release the button. Let's try electric/wind, your gun actually forms a square of electricity, constantly attacking the target like an aimbot. If you have good movement while using that, you're good to go! That's what my friend and I did; I was the rapid movement fighter with electric/wind and he was electric/fire which is like a fireball DRILL. Cool, right?

There's two modes to pick from when you first start the game, which is Fixed-Mode and Free-Mode. Fixed mode is when you shoot, you're forced to stand still, but the trade off is that it's much easier to accurately shoot at someone from a specific angle, as opposed to Free mode where you might just be constantly walking passed them trying to achieve the same effect. Though, free mode is obviously better for movement, and is almost required in Expert mode.

As far as difficulties go, this is one of the games that did it RIGHT on difficulty! It's not hard because enemies hit harder; they don't. Expert Mode is difficult because of the dodging required; all the enemies on the screen, lasers shot at you, bombs thrown at you. It's tough!

The bosses are incredibly fun, unique types to play against. The second boss alone has seven different forms! I was JUST playing solo on Expert mode only to nerd-rage hard at his Eagle form, where his wings and his tail take different formations where you have to try and slip passed him to the bottom of the screen. It sounds easy until he comes up BACKWARDS and his wing manages to pin you to the wall.

It's one of those games that every real gamer should play at least once. Especially if the real gamer has friends. ... A friend. Singular. ... Pick up an emulator and play it!
