The Classic Monopoly Board Game

Monopoly is a board game by Parker Brothers and is named after the economic concept of monopoly, the domination of a market by a single entity. That is the official explanation.

To me, myself, and I, Monopoly is a chance to kick another person's butt and rule the board! This game is only fun if you have a good chance of winning...which means you need to get off to a good start and grab the good properties. What are the best properties to own, you say?

The best properties to have:

* All 4 railroads
* The orange color group
* The red color group

Having all 4 railroads is an easy $200 every time someone lands on it. Plus, there are 3 cards which will send others to your railroads:
* One chance card sending the player to Reading Railroad
* One chance and one community chest card sending the player to the nearest railroad for DOUBLE the rent.

The orange color group is highly rated because they are the most-hit properties coming out of jail - and everyone goes to jail.

The red color group because there is a chance card sending the player to Illinois Avenue, plus Illinois is the 3rd highest hit property on the board.

Interesting Facts

Marvin Gardens is actually a mis-spelling of the original location name, Marven Gardens. It was not until 1995 that Parker Brothers acknowledged this mistake and formally apologized to the residents of Marven Gardens for the misspelling. Another change was the use of North Carolina Avenue which was substituted for South Carolina Avenue on the board.

Short Line is believed to refer to the Shore Fast Line, a streetcar line that served Atlantic City. A booklet included with the reprinted 1935 edition states that the four railroads that served Atlantic City in the mid 1930s were the Jersey Central, the Seashore Lines, the Reading Railroad, and the Pennsylvania Railroad.

The actual "Electric Company" and "Water Works" serving the city are respectively Atlantic City Electric Company and the Atlantic City Municipal Utilities Authority.

    I have my copy of the original Monopoly from the UK which dates back to the 1960's. It seemed weird playing it in the USA with different properties having grown up with a different version that had places in London on the board.
