    Know this, O worthy and diligent lensmaster;
    With accomplishment you’ve earned a tryster.
    As a token of immense appreciation expressed,
    A squid angel leaves this lens heartily blessed.
    On a rendering that is sparkling in its own right,
    Propagating an appealing thought well and quite;
    If you were to notice a slender shimmering crust;
    From the angel’s wand, it is a spill of stardust.

    Whether intelligent, ingenuous, vigorous, or wuss;
    When it comes to poetry, there is a child in all of us.

    You've reminded me, I haven't read poetry to my little one for a while. And one of his all time fav books is a beautiful book of poetry for children by your first featured poet on this lens, Walter de la Mere. Lovely lens!

    My favs growing up were out of Mother Goose or Dr.Seuss. I read them and read them to my kids. Thanks for this lens, very sweet! =) VERY important for young minds. My kids still remember the different voices I used.

    Great lens. I loves poems. It's sad, but most kids today don't even know most of the classic nursery rhymes that we grew up knowing and loving.

    Incredible lens. I love children's poems and wish they did more of this in school. My favourite is one called The Hippopotamus's Birthday. Can't remember who wrote it
  • mjtaylor Mar 15, 2012 @ 10:14 am | delete
    My mother amused me with Ogden Nash ... and there are a few I recall. My favorite for kids is Panther:
    A panther is like a leopard
    Except it isn't peppered.
    Should you behold a panther crouch,
    Prepare to say Ouch!
    Better yet: if called by a panther,
    Don't anther!

    I don't know if I have a favorite...but I do have some favorite fables :) You have one of my all time favorite children't poetry books here A Child's Garden of Verses. Poems for kids are a great way to teach...Dr. Seuss knew that very well :)
  • favored1 Mar 4, 2012 @ 7:01 pm | delete
    I don't have any one poem that I like since I didn't grow up with children's stories like these, but I do think that poetry triggers the imagination.
  • billsolano Mar 1, 2012 @ 1:34 pm | delete
    Very Nice lens, I really think the earlier you expose children to culture the more likely they will appreciate it as they grow.

    We have several great children poets in Slovenia, probably best known is Kajetan Kovic with his series about "Macek Muri and muca Maca" (think about musical Cats, but for kids), which happen to have great success thanks to great accompanying music by Jerko Novak and performance of Neca Falk.

    Love William Wordsworth ~ The Tables Turned is my favourite WW poem,

    UP! up! my Friend, and quit your books;
    Or surely you'll grow double:
    Up! up! my Friend, and clear your looks;
    Why all this toil and trouble?

    The sun, above the mountain's head,
    A freshening lustre mellow
    Through all the long green fields has spread,
    His first sweet evening yellow.

    Books! 'tis a dull and endless strife:
    Come, hear the woodland linnet, 10
    How sweet his music! on my life,
    There's more of wisdom in it.

    And hark! how blithe the throstle sings!
    He, too, is no mean preacher:
    Come forth into the light of things,
    Let Nature be your teacher.

    She has a world of ready wealth,
    Our minds and hearts to bless--
    Spontaneous wisdom breathed by health,
    Truth breathed by cheerfulness. 20

    One impulse from a vernal wood
    May teach you more of man,
    Of moral evil and of good,
    Than all the sages can.

    Sweet is the lore which Nature brings;
    Our meddling intellect
    Mis-shapes the beauteous forms of things:--
    We murder to dissect.

    Enough of Science and of Art;
    Close up those barren leaves; 30
    Come forth, and bring with you a heart
    That watches and receives.

    'Soft as a kitten on cotton.' I'm can't remember where I read this but it's been stuck in my brain for around forty years. Words, rhythm, poetry, especially the simplicity of children's poetry I find amazing.

    What a great collection. The poem that affected me most was "Richard Cory," which I first heard when I was 7 or 8. It reminded me that things are not always as they appear. I'm sure they don't teach it to kids that young now. Too upsetting.
  • Stazjia Sep 10, 2010 @ 3:21 am | delete
    I'd never heard of that poem so I googled it as soon as I read your comment. It's very moving, as you say. I don't think I'd want to read it to a 7 or 8 year old. I'm glad you like the poems I've chosen.

    wow... Superb! I love them. You are absoutely correct.poems can enchant children.poems can carry children toward very creative, dreamy worlds.after they they read or listen to poems, they try to think about the poems & they try to live in those worlds which were in poems.
    The children who were more enchanted by poems in their childhood are the greatest poets in this world. Listening, Reading are their foundation to build up creative minds.
    Not even for artists even for word famous scientists, philosophers have got their foundations by reading & listening to poems.
    so let your children to light up thier lives by gifting nice poems to them.

    A great collection of poems. I hear there is a movement to bring back poetry learning- not a bad idea in my book!
  • Stazjia Mar 6, 2010 @ 9:39 am | delete
    I think all children should be exposed to poetry at school and preferably taught about it too. I'm glad you like my selection.
  • jptanabe Mar 5, 2010 @ 11:24 am | delete
    Oh yes, love the Daffodils! And I do remember enjoying the Smuggler's Song. These poems bring back such memories - not all good I have to admit! Memorizing poems and reciting them in class was not my favorite childhood activity. But I'm glad to be able to recall many of these now. And I don't remember the Donkey, so I was happy to read it today.
  • Stazjia Mar 5, 2010 @ 4:17 pm | delete
    I found memorising poems quite easy to do when I was at school and even memorised poems that I liked, just for fun - what an odd, serious, little girl I must have been! I loved the 'Smugglers Song'. I could hear those "Five and twenty ponies trotting through the dark" in the rhythm of the words. "The Donkey" was one I had to learn at school and I've never forgotten it.
  • Sylvestermouse Mar 5, 2010 @ 10:24 am | delete
    Beautiful, absolutely beautiful! I love poetry and I thank you for including my favorite poem "The Daffodils." It was the first poem I ever memorized and I have been amazed at how many times the words have flowed back into my mind and smile once again. Angel Blessed and added to my Squid Angel Mouse Tracks lens.
  • Stazjia Mar 5, 2010 @ 4:12 pm | delete
    Thank you so much for the Angel Blessing, Cynthia, and the link. 'The Daffodils' always runs through my mind in spring when I see "A host of golden daffodils" as is quite common here at this time of year, except it's been so cold they aren't in flower yet but they will be in a week or so.

    When I take my grandchildren to the park and swing with them, I recite:

    "Oh, how I love to go up in a swing
    Up in the air so blue
    Oh I think it is the pleasantest thing
    Ever a child can do"

    I have never been good a memorizing! But my gk's LOVE my doing this.

    I've always loved "Daffodils" and it was a treat to hear it read so beutifully. You have a treasure mine here for sure. When I tutored reading, I started introducing opportunites for my first grade students to write poetry--once started, they wanted to do a bit of poetry every session. It was such fun!
