Ahhh the Karmann Ghia. What wonderful youthful memories. What was left of the nearly non-existent driver's side floor pan was hidden under 6 floor mats. A sheet of tin and some roofing tar fixed it right up...LOL. Thanks for a great lens.

You cannot help but love the beetle (rather like the 2CV which also oozes character)

Hello and Happy new Year, Thankyou so much for your site. I live in Australia and have just become the very excited and proud owner of a vw 74 T2 transporter. Your advice on the books available, the sharing and caring info is just what I was hoping to find. Kindest Regards, Michelle.

Great overview on classic Volkswagens. My friend is a huge VW fan, he used to restore them but now just collects and sells them - But I think he has trouble letting them go so mostly collects. :) I'm sure he'd love to have his site mentioned in your list of VW sites if you feel it is worthy. www.vintagevwcars.com

I love Volkswagen. After owning two British and one Japanese car, I bought my first Volkswagen in 1997, and I've driven VW ever since. Right now, I have a 1992 Golf Convertible Classic Line that I absolutely adore.
    Deutsche gründlichkeit at its best!

    Great lens! :)

The beetle picture you listed as a 1955 model is actually a 2003 Mexican beetle, one of the last made. Another important point is the fuel filter on that engine is a huge fire risk and the main reason VWs burn, fuel filters shouldnt be installed anywhere near the engine, they belong under the fuel tank.

Hi! do you have your own bug? Mine is a German 1963 VW Bug :)
  • cyberwizzard Nov 15, 2010 @ 2:21 pm | delete
My first car was a 1963 VW Karmann Ghia hard top. I paid three hundred dollars for it, gave it a paint job, used it for two years and sold it for what I had paid for it. Nice lens!

We really love the 1967 Volkswagen "V" Split Window Microbus. We could build the custom interior in 60ties fashion and have a very fun mini Limo Bus! Wouldn't that be crazy?

VWs are great. It's neat seeing a vintage bug or microbus going down the road today. You have a lot of good information here.

I have owned two bugs over the years a 57 and a 68 both great little cars. A bus is something thats been on my want list for years.

Great lens! My hubby and I had a new Mustang when we got married but when we started our family we decided to buy a VW beetle. We enjoyed that for a while but when out for a drive one day with her, a BIG car pushed our little VW across the intersection and into oncoming traffic. Scary stuff! for the new papa! We sold the VW and bought a BIG car. I like the VW still but....
5*s you did a great job! I'm lensrolling you to my car lens. Go Green Machines. Favored & I'm a fan!

Great lens about a great "thing". Thanks! Funny seeing the Thing again - had one when I came to America in the 70s. I've always associated the Beetle with fun and good friends. 5*

Excellent! I drove my 1966 bug for seven years. I used it for carpooling, traveling across Canada and the U.S. and numerous trips in California. Good looking lens you have here.

Love your updates. This really looks great and reads easily. My brother had a black Karmann Ghia and I loved that car. Wish I had it now.

Wow! What a great informative lens, you have certainly put a lot into it. My son loves VW's, he had an old beetle he restored and put a lot of love into, sadly had to let it go because of the economy.

    Top lens, 5 stars.

I wasn't allowed to own a Volkswagon so I like your idea of it being a honorary American Classic.
  • CoCo08 Sep 28, 2008 @ 12:28 am | delete
Very nice pics, I can't see a VW or even hear the name mentioned without thinking about my brother! He loved them and owned several over the years. I have to smile every time I see one!

I miss my '65 Karmann Ghia. It caught on fire and was pretty badly damaged, so my dad rebuilt the engine and I did the interior work. I must've gone to 20 VW festivals to get parts! Wonderful memories here... Squid Angel Blessings to you.

My uncle had a 1968 bug that I remember the floor boards rusting out in. Us kids would have to keep our feet up when we drove with him. My Dad also had a beetle. I'm not sure of the year but it had the small rear window.
