When Was The Last Time a Movie Scared the Hell Outta You?

Horror movies to many of us are a guilty pleasure that makes the hair stand up on the back of our necks. In recent years graphic gore and horrific visuals have supplanted suspense evident in early horror flicks.

We'll take a look at the genre from the early monster movies through the most recent offerings with a look at some under appreciated cult classics and memorable B-movies.

We'd also like to hear your opinion so please submit your views in our guestbook.

We'd also like to thank Rachel, better known around Squidoo as Relache, for recognizing our humble Horror Movie Lens as one of her faves on her terrific: 100 Best Movie Lenses

Can Horror Movies be Funny?

In the last few years there have been several successful horror movie parodies, most significant probably being Shaun of the Dead.

Mel Brooks did a great send up of a horror movie classic with his terrific Young Frankenstein

The thing is though, that many of the funniest horrror flicks were not meant to be funny ... they were dead serious about being really scary but they were either so cliche ridden or were the 9th installment of a once successful horror legend that just failed to frighten anyone except producers brain-storming ideas for Halloween 32.

The Wayans Brothers recognized this and made a mockery of many recent horror efforts in Scary Movie and then ironically followed in the footsteps of the genre they were ridiculing with Scary Movies 2,3 and 4 ... I guess as long as the green keeps coming in they'll keep puttin em out.

Well, it isn't technically a horror film, I don't thin, but Aliens! You go Ripley!

And I love Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the TV show, not the movie

The Haunting - original 1963 version. One of the scariest movies EVER made. I think this is because there is no blood or gore, the music and editing are superb and the horror is real and believable. One of my fave films of all time.

    Excellent site Jim. Cheers

I think you've covered all my favorites. I'm still scared by Psycho, even after watching it 50 times! Nice lens.
