Classic Television Programs

If you grew up in the 60's or 70's you grew up watching some of the best television shows ever produced. Those were the good old days when parental controls weren't needed, because television was just good clean fun. Most of the shows were either family oriented, educational or comedy.

Even though most of these shows are all a part of history now, they're just as popular today as they were when they first aired. For many, these shows represent a walk down memory lane and simpler times. For others they're just great shows that provide lots of entertainment. Whatever the reason, classic television will always have it's devoted fans.

Classic Entertainment

After all these years Lucy's antics are just as crazy and hilarious as they ever were. People are still hoping that all of the gang on Gilligan's Island make it home safe one day and every kid would love to have a friend like Flipper or a dog as smart as Lassie! And, who wouldn't want a talking robot like Will Robinson had?

The Courtship of Eddie's Father, Andy Griffith and the Partridge Family, portrayed that even in single parent homes there was still lot's of love. And, the Brady Bunch told us that even though there's going to be fights and arguments in a house full of kids, brother's and sister's still love each other!

Classic Cartoons

Most of the classic cartoons just never went away, they remained so popular they returned year after year.

Scooby Doo, the Pink Panther and many more are still favorites with kids of all ages.

A lot of the cartoons today are geared more towards adults, such as Beavis and Butt Head and Adult Swim cartoons. Even Roger Rabbit wasn't meant to be a kids movie.

Classic cartoons like Rocky and Bullwinkle are great for kids of any age. Adult cartoons are for adults, don't let the myth that animated shows are for children affect your judgement.

Classic Television Was More Wholesome

The classic television shows did much more than entertain. While some were just for fun, most of them taught values and morals that followed us throughout adulthood. We watched as families like The Munsters and The Brady Bunch learned to get along, learned to work out their problems and displayed love and loyalty to each other.

The world of television shows today definitely depict images that would never have been considered for television four decades ago. Sex was usually always left to the imagination of those who were old enough to know what it was. In fact, back then Ricky and Lucy and many other married couples had twin beds!

Classic Television Popular After All These Years

The popularity of classic television is evident in the numerous shows that are becoming available on DVD and are still being shown on stations like Nick at Night. While there are certainly some good shows on television today, few are as wholesome as the shows from the 60's and 70's. And, few instill moral values and principals.

Fortunately, most of these classic television programs are still being broadcast in re-runs for the enjoyment of us and our children. Think about what types of shows your children are currently watching. Are they as wholesome and even beneficial as some of the classic stuff?

Educational programs don't have to be boring. Sit your children down in front of a great program like Captain Kangaroo, The Electric Company or Sesame Street and watch how fast they become interested.

Variety Shows

Variety shows were very popular in the late 1960s and especially in the 1970s. Great shows like Carol Burnett, Sonny and Cher, Laugh In and Hee Haw gave us lots of laughs with silly jokes, skits and often some good music.

I would have to say my favorites are Carol Burnett and Hee Haw. It would be a hard call because I really like some of the others too.

I think Carol Burnett is very talented and Harvey Korman and Tim Conway have got to be two of the funniest men ever on television. With a combination like that the Carol Burnett Show was really hilarious.

Hee Haw

Hee Haw started up in 1969, and although I was very young I remember my family watching it. When I was a kid I thought the jokes were dumb and corny, but as I got older I realized that was what made them funny. A cool thing about Hee Haw was that they always had a different country music star on as a guest.

Of course variety shows weren't anything new to television when Hee Haw was launched in 1969. Legends like Milton Burl and even kid's shows like The Mickey Mouse Club and Howdy Doody paved the way and inspired the future of variety shows.
