From the lens Teaching Article: How to be an Unforgettable Teacher.

  • amberchina May 24, 2012 @ 6:33 am | delete
My students love learning with videos. I search the net for free videos all the time. BrainPop, YouTube, and TeacherTube always have a lot to offer. I wanted a fun and entertaining video about a reading strategy we use daily, but couldn't exactly what I wanted, so I made this one and it's been really effective and popular with my students. Hope it's helpful for your children at home or school too!

As a teacher I can agree with your suggestions. I make it a point to know my kids names by the end of the week if I have 5-7 classes. Less than that, by one day. Find out each child's favorite hobby and interests; you can build anything around something they like.

Thanks for sharing this excellent lens on teachers. Education is one of my vocations. I believe teachers are fundamental to making a society prosper, and uplifting people from within. I fully agree, that teachers must be "accessible" - their time, their coaching, their sharing takes the learning experience to a whole new level.

What a great Lens, and how times have changed since I was at school!
I got covered with dust from the chalk used on the blackboard, because I always sat in the front desk.
I noted that the teacher used to take more interest in that was going on at the back of the class, where the boys used to sit, but we all had to be very quiet and well behaved.
I was really slow learning to read, but my mom helped me at home which made all the difference, and she made sure that we always had interesting books to read, as we had no TV, and there were no computers or mobile phones around then!
  • karmicchristian Jun 9, 2011 @ 8:42 am | delete

  • jamespete May 23, 2011 @ 12:30 pm | delete
Solid stuff. You speak from experience. What I noticed also was the emphasis on creating an environment conducive to learning, on the teacher's style. In this context, the content seems secondary.

Consider the contrast of this traditional classroom and online or distant education. For content online may work better. However, there is so much to be said for the social part of education, for just getting to know teachers, artists, friends.
  • nuestraherencia May 20, 2011 @ 2:50 pm | delete

At one time in my career, I wrote and produced a series of Video Training packages for the Alberta Education Department (Alberta Canada). In each package (lit, math, ect) we profiled "excellence." We followed teachers thoughout the province who were considered to be the best of the best. And what a difference best made. The above and beyond steps that these teachers took to create an amazing teaching environment for their students was amazing. I was in awe and considered myself privileged to be able to showcase their talents.

These teachers were indeed UNFORGETABLE! Thanks for honoring them by creating this lens.

Can I add my 2 cent here!? I will anyway. :) Be yourself and have fun. Know when to laugh and when to be serious. Be the one that kids remember as "strict but fair". The one I love the most from your list is: "Never carry a grudge."

I had to smile at the "A Great Teacher Lives in or Visits the Neighborhood". I can't afford to live in my students' neighborhood, they live in million dollar houses. I can tell you my students can afford a lot more than I can on a teacher's wage. Does that mean I'm not a great teacher? :) However, I know what you are referring to.

A great teacher is the one who gets cheers and students clapping when they enter the classroom. A great teacher is the one that students can't stop being excited about that fact that s/he their teacher. A great teacher is the one that has passion for their subject and teaches it with dedication and competence. A great teacher is the one who believes in their students, has high expectations and high standards of themselves and the students they teach. A great teacher ... I'll stop here otherwise I'll write an essay.

WoW, Stephen, this is the best, most succinct advice I have seen in a long while. I will share it on my blog and with my colleagues at American International School in Egypt. Many of us expats here have a habit of socializing with each other in our own worlds. Your comments have 'hit home.'
I would like to add a link to http://showandtell.edublogs.org/
This blog is for teachers, to help reach all learners, on the topic of differentiated instruction.
Best Wishes to you and your students!

I completely agree with your 10 points for being an unforgettable teacher, not always easy to do, but worth striving towards. Feel free to check out my teacher blog some time--inspired a bit by this lens to possibly write a post on the qualities that make one an unforgettable (or even just a 'good' teacher)

Excellent lens and well crafted--5 stars! thought about becoming a teacher 39 years years ago, but decided to become a social worker instead. So now I try to help others find new ways to change. Feel free to tell me more about ways to increase traffic to my lenses. Have a great day. Sincerely: Gary Eby, author and therapist.

This should be required reading and regular re-reading for all teachers. Good common sense advice that sometimes gets lost in the stress of everyday teaching.

I've been teaching for a long time but I'm still learning. When I stop learning, its time to get out of the classroom.

Hi Stephen, Great lens! As a former junior high English grammar and composition teacher, junior high conversational Japanese teacher, and high school biology teacher, I appreciated your lens--well thought out and to the point--and ALL teachers (or teacher wanna-bes) should read it. I'm no longer teaching (but writing is *sort of* like teaching, right?--especially if folks *learn* from it)... and I play with Squidoo as a way to provide photos and writing as "extra curriculum" for those teachers working on a tight budget! So... if you like marine biology, linguistics, science, or writing/editing and so on..(and other mundane interests), you are welcome to drop by my wild collection of lenses. Thanks again for dropping by and leaving a note--I always enjoy hearing from folks.

Well said, from another teacher! My tip?
It's usually....'don't talk, listen !' and that's for the teachers! Faved - your comments welcomed on my lens also.

Thanks for visiting my lens on how teachers can get their student loan cancelled. You have a nice lens here with some valid tips. I would have liked you to have a plexo where other teachers could add some of their own tips... I am still giving you 5*'s and adding your lens to my lensroll. :-)

Great lens! Good teachers are a blessing! 5 stars
  • a_willow Aug 28, 2008 @ 7:32 am | delete
I would add one more: be consistent! That's really important for students - to see that they are all the same in teachers' eyes and there is no favors.
Still, great article - very down to earth.

Stephan, great teaching tips - my father was a teacher for nearly 30 years and it sure seems like teaching has become much more difficult since then. I came across a blog on classroom management and classroom discipline from a teacher in L.A. that your readers may find useful for getting control of some of those more challenging classrooms.

    Best of luck to you.
