Claudia Black: My Favorite Actress

Claudia Black is my favorite actress, appearing as a leading star in one of the best SF-series ever: Farscape. This lens is devoted to her, her beauty and her skillfull performances.

Why was Farscape such a good series? To me in the first place because of the strong characters and cast. Most of the time a SF context is weird and it is easy to lose faith in it. There is a remedy for that lack of belief. Strong characters portrayed by above average performers, who give you the impression that they are at home in the futuristic setting, will help you believe it. And of course Claudia Black is a stunningly beautiful woman who portrayed a strong woman, who survives a deep identity crisis and overcomes her fear for commitment.
In the second place because the series dealt with the highest possible integrity - look it´s just Television, duh - with so many modern issues: the limts of loyalty, how to deal with your past, the bonding together of complete strangers because of a common threat etc.
The writers managed also to give each character his or her own psychological development, including even puppets like Emperor Rigel. From an arrogant selfish and loudmouth thief, he developed into a sympathetic, loyal team mate. And I already mentioned Aeryn Sun, portrayed by this beautiful actress, Claudia Black, who made this series more than delightful to watch. Her struggle with her own fears and her innate stubbornes
Finally, the story dealt on many levels with the dark side of huge organizations and the essential falsehood of political power. And that anarchistic trait - in an Australian series - I loved the most.

And did I mention how beautiful Claudia Black is?

Farscape: the Series

Source: Wikipedia

Farscape was an Australian-American science fiction television series filmed in Australia and produced originally for the Nine Network. The series was conceived by Rockne S. O'Bannon and produced by Jim Henson Productions andHallmark Entertainment.[1] The Jim Henson Company was largely responsible for the various alien makeup and prosthetics, and two regular characters (the animatronic puppets Rygel and Pilot) are entirely Creature Shop creations.
Although the series was under contract for five seasons, it was abruptly cancelled after production had ended on its fourth season, effectively ending the series on a cliffhanger. Co-producer Brian Henson later secured the rights to Farscape, paving the way for a three-hour miniseries entitled Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars, which Henson directed himself.

Aeryn Sun

Source: Wikipedia

Aeryn Sun , played by Claudia Black, is a former Peacekeeper pilot and officer. Although she appears to be human, she is in fact Sebacean, a species indistinguishable from humans in external appearance. At the time John Crichton appears through a wormhole in the beginning of the series, Officer Aeryn Sun is in her Prowler battling to retake the Leviathan Moya, which has been seized by escaping prisoners Ka D'Argo, Rygel, and Pa'u Zotoh Zhaan.
However, Aeryn's prowler is caught up in the stream of Moya's starburst and is towed along with the escaping Leviathan. Aeryn is brought on board Moya as a prisoner, but when she and Crichton encounter her commanding officer Captain Crais, she defends John from Crais' allegation that John deliberately attacked and killed Crais' brother, saying he isn't brave enough or smart enough to have done so. In return, Crais declares her to be "irreversibly contaminated" from spending too much time with an unknown life form, which means a death sentence. John Crichton and D'Argo soon escape the Peacekeepers again and, having nowhere else to go, Aeryn reluctantly becomes a fugitive alongside them.
Aboard Moya, she learns to think beyond the strict, militaristic confines of her Peacekeeper upbringing. Born in service aboard a Command Carrier, it is the only life she has known, and thus is very well skilled in hand-to-hand and weapons combat. She also becomes a valuable and important member of Moya's crew, and a companion and romantic interest to Crichton during the series. It is only after leaving the Peacekeepers that she can begin to find out about her parentage. She has discovered that her mother, Xhalax Sun, was a Peacekeeper pilot who-against Peacekeeper regulations-fell in love with an older officer, Talyn Lyczac. They deliberately had Aeryn, a child born of love, and Xhalax sneaks into Aeryn's dormitory one night to tell her so, which is strictly against regulations. To redeem her crime, Xhalax was forced by the Peacekeepers to choose between the two, and she executed Talyn so that Aeryn could live.
Aeryn evolves from a cold, detached soldier into a valuable friend and crewmate. Her relationship with John Crichton evolves also, Aeryn ultimately becoming a compassionate wife and loving mother in the end of the show. They name their son D'Argo Sun-Crichton, after their dear friend who seemingly lost his life in the Peacekeeper Wars.

Stargate: the Series

Source: Wikipedia

Stargate is a military science fiction franchise, initially conceived by Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin. The first film in the franchise was simply titled Stargate. It was originally released on October 28, 1994 by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Carolco, and became a worldwide hit grossing nearly $200 million (USD) worldwide. Three years later, Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner created a television series titled Stargate SG-1 as a sequel for the film.
In addition to film and television, the Stargate franchise has expanded into other media, including books, video games, and comic books. These supplements to the film and television series have resulted in significant development of the show's fictional universe and mythology. In 2008, the films Stargate: The Ark of Truth and Continuum were released direct-to-DVD, which in total grossed over $21 million in the United States. In 2002 the franchise's first animated series,Stargate Infinity, began airing, which holds no canonicity in the franchise despite its Stargate SG-1-inspired plot. In 2004, the TV series Stargate Atlantis was released as a spin off from Stargate SG-1 and a third series, Stargate Universe, premiered on October 2, 2009.

Great lens about Claudia Black! She's the first actress I've ever really paid attention to. I love both Aeryn and Vala!

Awesome lens! I think my buddy, JulioFromNY, would particularly appreciate this. Farscape is one of those shows he always mentions with great sadness, due to how Sci-Fi (like Fox) keeps killing wonderful shows. I particularly loved Claudia Black on Stargate SG-1. It's a shame she couldn't join the cast sooner but the show had an impressive (and long run).

Come check out our show at http://www.mundanechatter.com as we mention Farscape in Episode 5, I believe. They're continuing the legacy in comic book format. It's not the same, I know, but it's still worth checking out! 8)
