Collecting Vintage Photos, Photographs as a Hobby and Business

Coming home from an auction or estate sale with a box full of vintage photos including cabinet card photos, glass magic lantern slides, tintype photos, any kind of old photo, is a source of fun and joy for me. I love finding ways to supplement our income by working at home, and one way that I do that is to buy and resell old photographs of all kinds. I look through them carefully for treasures, enjoy them, think about what life must have been like for the people in the picture, or take in the different things in the background that would now be considered antiques. I keep some, scan others, and resell many.

This page is devoted to my love for old photos. They are so fascinating that I wonder why families don't pass them down and they so often end up at estate sales or auctions. But if they didn't end up at estate sales and auctions, I wouldn't have this hobby and source of income. Perhaps they are appreciated even more than they would be if they stayed in the family, it is hard to say.

Why Buy from Someone Like Me?

Almost 100% positive feedback rating, over 2600 of them.

Alas, after 13 years, I got my very first negative feedback. I'm not sure whether I deserved it, and it did hurt to get the first one. I share more at Selling on eBay vs Amazon.1 point

Collecting Vintage Photo Albums

It is surprising to me that when I visit estate sales or auctions, complete family albums with vintage photos are often for sale. I wonder how families can let these leave the family, then I realize that maybe this is the last generation...or maybe the family just isn't interested...which brings joy to whoever buys the albums...so happiness is being spread no matter what.

Here are a few vintage albums available on eBay.

I'm passionate about antique photos and have several hundred of them. Many are of my own ancestors, and most all of them are identified. Nice lens!

I like old photos of places that I'm familar with. It's interesting to me to compare how places look now compared to how they used to look. I love seeing old pictures and postcards of my hometown of Selma, Alabama. A couple of months ago, I checked out a library book about New Orleans that had tons of photos of pictures from contemporary New Orleans and next to it they had a picture taken years ago of the same address. I found that fascinating. Enjoyed your lens!

Thank you for your visit...I agree, pictures are the story of a person's life...it's good to know that if a family decides they don't want them for some reason, or the family has no one to inherit them, they can still be enjoyed by people like us.

Didn't realise people were interested in other people's old family photos - I have a quantity of WW2 photos and postcards that were collected and sent home by my father, mostly from Madagascar and Italy. They are not in an album at present, just jumbled in a box, but they are in a dry place. I also have some framed photos of racing cars probably of Goodwood since that is near where I live. None of these are on ebay at present, but happy to list them if you would be interested.
  • happynutritionist Dec 11, 2009 @ 10:02 am | delete
Hi Jenny, If the pictures have no personal family members in them, they would probably bring in some income for you if you were to list them on eBay. I buy in quantity, enjoy looking through, then sell, so buying individual pictures would probably not be something I'd personally do. Do searches on eBay to find out what is selling, wait until the holidays are over. Thanks for stopping by and your comment.

I have some vintage photo albums passed on by my in-laws I'm not sure what to do with. We have no children to pass them to, not any other younger relatives. My friend who deals in Ephemera says these might be of interest to someone since they date from pre-Communist Yugoslavia.

I am quite certain it would be of value. Do you sell on eBay?
