Treating Acne With Clay

Clay is a natural substance rich in minerals, trace elements and nutrients. Different types of clay are found in most soils all over the world. Mixed with water and applied as a mask on the body, clay becomes an excellent treatment for poor skin conditions (including acne) as it is able to absorb toxins and impurities beyond the skin. As the clay is washed away the absorbed toxins go along with it leaving your skin cleaned and nourished. It is one of the best natural home remedies for acne there is.

Different Types Of Clay

There exists different types of clay with specific properties and strengths that will be adequate for different skin types. Whatever clay you end up choosing, pick one that is pure and without any chemicals and dyes.

Green clay, perhaps the most well known type, is the strongest and the one most able to draw toxins from the skin and normalize oil levels found in the skin. Because it can dry the skin out effectively, it will be best for people with oily skin . If you have acne on the face and back, this is a good type of clay to use.

If green clay dries your skin too much, try the white one which is softer. For those with sensitive skin, it may be a better idea to start with white clay for the face and move on to the green one afterwards if you feel the treatment should be stronger. White clay will give your skin a smooth and glowing finish.

Two other relatively common types of clay but less often used for acne treatment are the pink and yellow ones. Pink clay will be good to leave your skin hydrated through long-term treatments while yellow clay is somewhere in between the green and white clay in terms of strength.

How To Use

Buy dry clay and mix equal amounts of clay and pure water to create enough paste for the surface you want to treat. You can also mix the clay with water infused with herbs or hydrosols for optimal healing effects. Apply a slightly thick layer of clay paste on the face and other infected areas and leave it on for 15 minutes or until the masks are dry. Rinse abundantly with warm water or take a shower if you had a mask on your back.

Do make sure your skin is amply hydrated afterwards. One excellent product to apply after a clay mask is aloe vera gel which moisturizes the skin and helps to heal acne scars - best of all, it is not an oil-based substance and will be adequate for all skin types.
