And while the use of clay tiles on slanted roofs goes back deep into antiquity, fortunately for all of us, its installation is far from a lost art. Installing a clay tile roof differs from installing shingles, cedar shake, or corrugated metal, and does take different equipment and skills than these other types of roofing. An eye to design is important.
In fact, the very first step to installing a clay tile roof is the design. Go with what works best for the type of clay roof tile you plan to use, its shape: whether flat, rectangular or barrel, and its colors. Plan how it will best fit the area to be covered. Inspect the tiles as they are delivered to make certain they were not damaged in rough transport. Then lay the tiles out in stacks before beginning. This will shorten installation time. Reject any broken tiles or any tiles with a "black core," as these were not completely fired and will be not be strong enough. Some tiles, particularly those which have been glazed for color, may require a diamond saw to cut.
Next, install underlayment over the area to be tiled, and secure it according to the manufacturers specifications. 30 pound felt is typical, but be sure to research local building codes. Then install 28-gauge corrosion-resistant metal flashing where needed. Install a cant slip to set the correct angle for the tiles, leaving a .05 to one inch space between to let rain run through every four feet or so. Measure for your tile making sure to leave a one inch overhang. Lay the clay roof tile in courses, securing with nails, according to local codes.
To maintain the beauty of your new tile roof, wash infrequently with chemical cleaner from the a ladder placed where the majority of the tiles can be reached easily. Avoid walking directly on the tiles. Pressure clean to rinse. To repair broken tiles, chip out any mortar, remove the cap tile, and carefully lay the tiles out in order. Clean thoroughly, and re-mortar when completely dry. For major repairs, expert help should be sought.

- Great article! I would like to add that most clay roof tiles do not need frequent cleaning, and is not recomended to use chemicals. Clay is a natural product, and roof tiles with low water absorption do not need preasure cleaning for many years... http://www.santafetile.com
