For Crafty Gals, Cleaning An Iron Is An Essential Duty!
A hot iron is part of regular crafting, and when you are pressing items with glue and fusibles; the result is a really messy iron.
So, you occasionally need to wash off all the sticky stuff and begin with a fresh, clean pressing surface.
It only takes a few minutes to get your iron sparkling clean again... follow me as I show you the steps I take to removing the gook from my sometimes sorely neglected steam iron!
Overview of Cleaning An Iron
A Hot Iron Is Easier to Clean
Once the iron is hot,
YOU ABSOLUTELY MUST UNPLUG IT BEFORE YOU CLEAN!
The reasons are obvious, nevertheless... better safe than sorry!
I also use hot water with my cleaning sponge.
The next important factor is to wear a good grade of rubber gloves. If you burn your fingers, you won't want to spend any time pressing the fabrics you are getting ready to craft with!
I choose Playtex Living Gloves. I LOVE Them!
The quality is terrific, and they come in hot pink... functional AND cute.

If An Iron Has No Electrical Plug, How Does It Get Hot?
This iron was used in the days before electricity...
I remember my great-grandmother using these irons. They were very heavy, and you needed two of them.
One to press with, and the other one to sit on top of the coal stove to get hot while you were ironing with the first one!
Yes, it was a lot of hard work... and made your arm tired.
The memory of those days are part of what has created my extreme appreciation for modern appliances!
