How to Clean Your Bathroom Cheaply!

Clean that bathroom!

If you're like me and possibly have ADD and doing mundane chores feels impossible and overwhelming..... Reading how to clean a bathroom can be really helpful. It took me forever to learn how to do it right. My husband had to help me out quite a bit. Messes become invisible to me so I have to do things on a schedule, too. Mirrors, counters, toilet, spraying bleach on key parts of the tub, and wiping down the floors is weekly, and scrubbing is monthly. I have to take off and clean handles monthly as well as do some detailing.

green clean

I'm very..... frugal, yes, frugal's the word. I also like to be green. Fortunately, both seem to go hand-in-hand often. For cleaning, I like to keep it as simple as possible and as cheap as possible. I use rubbing alcohol, vinegar, bleach, and good ol' soap and water. Sometimes I use dish detergent for greasy jobs, but I don't need to often.

Deep clean and then maintain with frequent cleaning.

These WORK.

These are my cleaning tools. They're cheap. They're green. They work.

Vinegar and bleach are great products because they're cheap, and you only really need a little bit with a lot of water. I encourage you to opt for elbow grease, which doesn't take much with these products, I promise you. Rather than using harsh chemicals and expensive products, these do the trick.

Mirror: Begin with small, quick things

I have to start small when I clean, so I usually go with the mirror. I put some rubbing alcohol on a rag and wipe the mirrors down. That's quick and easy and usually gives enough momentum to keep going.

Floors

The floors need love too. Make sure to wipe behind the toilet and scrub any places with the brush that you need to. You might need to get in the tile grout. That's okay though! Get what you can if you don't have time or energy to do it all. Find what works better: bleach and water, vinegar and water, baking soda and water, or maybe rubbing alcohol. Normally, I wipe down the floor with rubbing alcohol because it's quick and easy. When I scrub the floors, I usually use bleach. It works for my tile and grout types. But it might not work the best with what you have.

It's also important to make sure your floors or surfaces aren't made of any special material that requires special products or that can't take something like bleach.

Counter

quick clean and deep clean

My quick clean is just wiping down the counter and wiping off the fawcet so it looks nice and shiny.

Deep cleaning each month is scrubbing in the sink bowl with a brush and making sure to get the nooks and crannies. I also take the fawcet handles off to clean them, because they get mildew inside a little bit. They also look nice and clear and shiny when they're clean! Then, I like to clean some other items on the counter, like my toothbrush holder, bite guard holder, as well as my husband's shaving cream lid and razor holder.

Shower curtain

The easiest way to keep your pretty shower curtain nice is to have a shower curtian liner. These come in a variety of materials. The one we currently have is some fabric that's water resistant and still breathes. I usually just have to spray it with bleach and when I take a shower, I'll hold it up and let the water hit it in the right places.

Some shower curtains can take a run through the wash. Some might get too nasty and require replacement, because they can't be washed successfully. Alternatively, you can set it down in the tub or maybe on the tile floor and scrub the sucker with a scrub brush.

Soap scum

the enemy of many

Soap scum wasn't on my radar until I met my husband. I was totally clueless about cleaning things. However, wet a scrub brush and get some bleach or use baking soda mixed with some water. Scrub away! You'll be pleased with the results. It really doesn't take that long. We're both OCD so we might use more soap and consequently get more soap scum around the tub, so it takes me about half an hour to 45 minutes to scrub it all clean. I feel good seeing the shiny results!

Toilet

weekly and as needed

I pour a little bleach in the toilet or on my brush and scrub it as needed. It might need a refresher in the middle of the week so I just pour some bleach in and let it sit there a while.

That's the most difficult part of toilet cleaning, I think. It's important to get around the bowl on the outside and as much on the bottom sides and the back also. Wipe off the tank outside and the lid outside. Wipe off the top and bottom of the seat and seat lid. Make sure to get that little space behind the seat and in front of the tank. Just wiping that off twice a week takes probably five seconds and makes a difference in how clean the bathroom looks!

Cleaning your brushes and sponges

They can get icky

You may have seen lots of info on how your sponges and dish towels can collect a lot of bacteria. You don't have to get one-use paper towels or toss your brushes after a while. There are several options on how you can clean them.

Vinegar

One thing you can do is soak your brushes and sponges in vinegar.

Microwave

I put my sponge in the microwave when I'm ready to wipe off the counter in the evening. I nuke it for 45 seconds and that kills the bacteria. I've nuked a scrub brush too because it's all plastic, but I made sure it wouldn't melt at all first! If I think my sponge has gotten raw meat on it at all, even a drop, I'll nuke it for at least a minute, soap it up a little extra and rinse it, and soak it in vinegar. That's probably overkill, but I'm a germophobe and get a bit crazy when it comes to raw meat.

Where's the love?
