The Change from Clean Language to Swear Words Everywhere

When I was young, people were careful about the words they used. Parents felt it was important to teach their children to use appropriate language. "Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain" was a commandment people tried to live by. There are many people who use the word, god, with no thought whatsoever. Today words spoken to give offense are common. No longer is there a consideration of polite language. Instead whatever you want to say seems to be okay.
Words are really not good or bad. Words are used to communicate. If words are used to put someone down, to humiliate someone, to express anger and to hurt others, then I would call them bad words. It really depends on the intent behind the words. Nearly every swear word has a good meaning to it. But when a word is used to put someone down, it becomes a swear word. For instance the word dummy refers to not being able to speak and applies to things like the figures that are used to test cars in a crash. When the word dummy is applied to a person indicating they aren't very smart, it becomes a swear word, in my opinion.
I believe we all are responsible for eliminating bad language. Example is a powerful way to promote good clean language. If no one used bad language, then children would never learn to use bad words. If we all were to strive to use positive uplifting language in all we say, what a wonderful world this would be. You can point out errors to others without putting them down. Swear words aren't necessary to communicate.
I remember a time when people apologized for using bad language. I remember when men would say, "Watch your language, there's a lady present." I remember when you could watch a television show or a movie and not have to worry about hearing bad words. People can communicate without using swear words. It just takes a desire to do so and a determination to use good language.

A Club to Eliminate Cussing

When I came across a video of a young man who was tired of hearing swear words, I wanted to learn more about him. He created a club at his school where everyone that joined would not swear. It sounded like a great idea to me. Belonging to a club like that wouldn't hurt any one else. It would be a positive uplifting club. I found it hard to believe that he was swore at and even received death threats just for doing something positive. Why is it okay to tolerate those who swear, but when someone tries to use clean language and encourage others to do so too they have to be put down?
I decided I wanted to help promote what this young man is doing. So this lens has links to videos about The No Cussing Club and links to the website. If more of us promote clean language, this world will be a more positive place to live.

Clean Entertainment

Entertainment has really changed over the years. For instance television shows would not show inappropriate things. For instance many of the scenes showing a parent's bedroom showed two twin beds rather than one double or queen size bed. For the most part language was clean in the shows. I remember hearing that entertainment needed to be more real. I've never felt entertainment needs to be just like real life. Real life can be boring. There are many uneventful times in life that would not make for good entertainment. I always have felt entertainment should lift us up, make us think, give us hope, and give us encouragement. Unfortunately putting in "real" things in our entertainment such as "real" language has instead pulled us down, deadened our thinking, and leaves us hopeless and discouraged. Maybe it's time to stop being "real" and go back to trying to be ideal.

Avoid Sound Alike Swear Words

Many sound alike swear words are commonly used. I hear people start with a certain swear word and realize it's not a good place or time to use it, so they switch to one of the sound alike words that starts with the same sound. If we can avoid even the sound alike words, we will be less likely to cuss. Sometimes the sound alike words can be heard as the actual swear word. In our church we teach that taking the Lord's name in vain is breaking a commandment. We are encouraged to use His name only in speaking reverently of him or when praying to him. One of the children used a phrase that is so common today. One of the leaders said, this isn't an appropriate time to use that phrase since we are not praying. The boy defended himself by saying I didn't say that word. He said he was using one of the sound alike words, so it was okay. But it really did sound like he used the Lord's name in vain. Sound alike words can sound like swear words. Avoiding them can save us from sounding like we are swearing or from causing other people to think of the swear word. Using the Lord's name in vain could be like the boy who cried wolf. We use it so casually and frequently that when we really need to use it in a prayer to seek help, it might not be recognized as a sincere use. Perhaps we would do well to stay as far away from sound alike words as we can to prevent any misunderstanding.

Bullying and Cussing

Many people recognize bullying as a problem in our schools. But most people probably don't associate bullying with cussing. Cussing is being disrespectful of people. Some one who cusses or swears thinks it is okay to put others down. Maybe they don't feel good enough about themselves. They can't uplift others because they feel that would make them look bad.
Mark Twain said, "Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great."
Bullies don't seem to believe that it okay for someone else to be praised. If they do praise someone, then they feel that they will somehow be less. Bullies try to belittle others so they can feel better about themselves. The problem is when you belittle someone else you pull yourself down too.
If we try to watch our language and we try to speak positively, we will lift others up which will in turn lift ourselves up. Bullying would become extinct. What a wonderful world it would be then.

Bullying in the Workplace

Bullying is a problem in school, but it is also a problem in the workplace. Some people act like they are better than others and deserve special treatment at the expense of others. They may use swear words and physical force to get what they want. Learning to deal with bullying is necessary in life.

Freedom of Speech or the Golden Rule

The golden rule of doing unto others as you would have them do unto you is a higher law then freedom of speech. In others words, I don't think you should say things to others that you wouldn't want them to say to you. Most swear words are words of condemnation. Personally I want to hear uplifting and edifying words. Life is challenging, and I need all the help I can get to believe that things can get better. Yes sometimes things need to change, but I believe there are better ways to bring about change than swearing at someone. Swear words are often used to express anger, but I feel unfortunately they often just stir up more anger in the people who hear them rather than bringing about the change in what caused the anger. We do need to be able to say what we feel in order to bring about change, but I feel some words will bring about that change while others like swear words will just escalate the problem.

What a wonderful lens; indeed freedom of speech has gone too far. I support you and your efforts to share the Golden Rule and promote clean speech. Thank-you from the heart! :)

Cussing often indicates that someone doesn't have a very extensive vocabulary.

How true! One of my friends, who is a retired schoolteacher, would use long words that are not commonly used but that mean the same thing to rephrase commonly used swear words and phrases that her students were using. They had to stop and think about what she was saying or even use their dictionary to look up the meaning of what she had just said.

I think swearing has it's place as an expression of extreme emotion! I wince when I hear people who cannot seem to utter a simple sentence that doesn't contain an expletive. It's crass, unpleasant to listen to and makes the person responsible come across as ignorant. Unfortunately bad language is widely used in the media and it's seen as "cool" to have a potty-mouth these days :( A good lens on a thought-provoking subject - blessed by this Squid Angel as part of the "Back To School Bus Trip"!

Swearing and cussing are seen as cool and they seem to make you fit in. Most swear words put others down or are condemning and judgmental. Many swear words are about dirty and gross things. Swear words don't uplift or help us feel better. Perhaps that is part of what is creating such a pessimistic outlook in the world today.
