Clean eyeglasses - how to get clean specs easy,quick without scratches
Take advantage of 30 years experience in cleaning spectacles. Get advice from an expert. I got my first spectacles at the age of 18. Ever since I have been fighting all kinds of dirt, dust, fat and other things on my spectacles. In fact I hate to have spectacles with specs on. No surprise that I tried to find the most efficient way to clean eyeglasses. It is not a big secret, but I am surprised how many people have difficukties to get the glasses clean. Frustration with smeared specs even on NewScientist !
Defining the task and evaluating the situation is step one, but we will not stay there !

"Why are modern spectacles impossible to clean properly with anything other than a special cleaning cloth? Whenever I try to get rid of even a small surface mark using a handkerchief, I end up with seemingly permanent multicoloured smears that can't be removed."

Step 1- So your spectacles are dirty?
You need to go to the next washing room as you will need some water, preferably warm, a bit of soap and some tissue or toilet paper. Of course you should not use soap with abrasive components for hand or face scrub or similar!
I know that it starts like that all the time !
Step 2 - Pre-showering the spectacles
Hold your spectacles under flowing water so the lenses get wet from both sides ! Do not touch the lenses!
Step 3 - Get a bit of soap on your fingers
Liquid soap is perfect, but also any other will do. Right handers use the right hand and left handers ? Make sure that your finger tips are clean! Avoid dirt on them that might scratch your glasses.
Get a bit of soap on your index, thumb and middle finger. Disperse the soap a bit on the fingers so the surface gets soft and slippery.

Step 4 - soap your pair of spectacles
Now gently take the lenses of your spectacles between the soaped fingers and gently move your fingers to disperse the soap on both sides of the lenses. It is NOT necessary to press and rub like a maniac -- no gently please, because your lenses should NOT be scratched. So once again soap gently,gently.
Step 5 - The after-shower - wash off the soap from the lenses
Now if possible turn the heat on to get very hot water also let the water flow strongly. Hold your spectacles into the water stream to wash off the soap. Do not hold the lenses in a 90° angle to the stream of water, because then you will get yourself a shower.
Better the water flows almost parallel to the lens surface. You might shift the angle a bit from one side to the other to wash away the soap from both sides of the lenses. Do not touch the lenses !
Step 6 - Finale grosso - using tissue if necessary
Dab gently - Please
If the water has been hot enough it will evaporate immediately after you have removed the glasses from the water stream and you alredady done.
If there are some drops of water still. Take a peace of tissue between those fingers which should be free of soap meantime! Then slightly dab the tissue on the water drops to take them away. Please do not rub the glasses!
Step 7 - Enjoy clear sight
Clear sight is not for ever(yone) of course, but it is nice to have it at least for an hour or so !
Summary: Do not rub or polish your eyeglasses it is unnecessary. At best it will damage your glasses!!

Can you clean eyeglasses in the dishwasher?
OMG,yes, but it is very likely that you damage your spectacles, either because the frame is damaged by hot water over time, or the glasses are damaged by moving parts or dishes. Also it is a wast of time and energy -
Can you clean eyeglasses with vinegar?
I never tried that. Vinegar is acidic,it can damage coataings on your glasses and the plastic frame. So vinegar cannot be commended from my point of view. -
Can I use dishsoap to clean my eyeglasses?
Yes, a mild, liquid dish soap is very good for cleaning eyeglasses. About the procedure read more above. -
Can I use Windex to clean eyeglasses?
I do not know the components of Windex, but it is popular for its really dramatic cleaning effect. Therefore I suspect it contains solvents.
My recommendation is to avoid any solvents on your eyeglasses to protect coatings and the frame, no Windex please. -
Can I use acetone nail polish remover to clean my eyeglasses?
Never ever do that! Your eyeglasses will not recover from that treatment with solvents. -
How do I avoid smear on my eyeglasses?
Proceed as explained above... avoid rubbing with a drying cloth or tissue. Use only mild soap and water. Rinse the eyeglasses with hot water, a littlte shaking and you are done the water drops fall of, the sight is clear and no smear.

- Don't rub your lenses with anything other than soapy fingers to remove the smudges. I blow them off before I clean them and afterwards to dry the water from the lenses. I use a can of compressed air I bought at Office Depot which is sold as "cleaning duster". I've had my lenses for over three months and do not have a scratch on them.
