You Deserve To Drink Pure Clean Water
Even the US public water supply isn't totally free from possible contaminates.
For as clean as the water is, there are still things in it that we do not want to drink, but they may also be in the water you buy at the store. The best option is to filter the water yourself.
Contaminated drinking water from my own home faucets became a major concern in 2001 when it was publicly revealed that my town's water supply had been contaminated with the gasoline additive, methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) from leaking underground tanks at a local service station.
After the crisis, the town drinking water being pumped in from a neighboring municipality seemed to have more of a chlorine taste to me than it did when it came from our own town wells.
The whole issue opened my eyes to just how fragile even the most sophisticated water supplies are, and spending just a relatively small amount of money to add an extra purification process to my drinking water is worth it.
While I in no way expect that these filters can protect me from another contamination like MTBE, they do give me peace of mind that I'm drinking water that is cleaner than it would be without the filters - I can taste the difference.
I also know that should there be another serious contamination of the local water supply, I either won't be affected, or my exposure will certainly be a lot less than if I wasn't filtering my own water!

Some of the things that may be in your tap water that you do not want to be drinking are:
- Chlorine - chlorination is the most common and perhaps most effective method used to purify public drinking water, but many people are concerned about the health effects of drinking the residual levels left in the water. Even municipalities that use alternatives to chlorination may have to maintain a certain level of chlorine due to regulations.
- Lead - a potent neurotoxin that accumulates in soft tissues and bone over time, even though lead isn't used to make water pipes anymore, some older houses may still have lead pipes in the plumbing, and there are other ways for lead to get into drinking water
- Radium - the decay product of uranium, radium naturally occurs in ground water, but is only a problem in certain areas depending on the local geology
- Cysts - a resting or dormant stage of a microorganism, usually a bacterium or a protist, when cysts reach favorable conditions, they become active again
I'm double filtering my drinking water, and I can taste a clear difference between filtered and non-filtered water in my own kitchen.
Not sure if you need to filter your water? You can test it for yourself with a home Drinking Water Test Kit.
MDC Finds Copepods And Rotifers In Water Of Connecticut Towns
April 2009
In industrial countries with highly regulated water supplies, tap water has been proven to be just as safe, or safer, than its commercial counterpart. In the United States, regulations concerning bottled water are generally the same as for tap water, but are weaker for some microbial contaminants. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which regulates bottled water at the federal level, permits the product to contain certain levels of fecal matter, whereas the Environmental Protection Agency does not allow any human waste in city tap water. Bottled water violations are not always reported to the public, and in most cases the products may be recalled up to 15 months after the problematic water was produced, distributed, and sold.

As safe as it is, there is still a possibility that things can show up in your tap water that you may not want to drink. In April 2009, Connecticut's Metropolitan District Commission (MDC) issued an advisory for customers in Hartford and nine area communities to boil their tap water before drinking it or using it for cooking.
Although official tests of samples found no live microorganisms, the original discovery was enough to cause a run on bottled water at area supermarkets, schools to shut off drinking fountains, and restaurants to stop serving ice with their beverages:
Bloomfield resident Jim Pines found what looked like "tiny polliwogs" about half the size of the tip of a pen on Monday. Hundreds of them appeared to be swimming in a sample an MDC worker took from Pines' water filter Tuesday. "The guy's hair stood up on his arms and he said, 'Stop drinking the water,'" Pines said. "It was completely disgusting. We were drinking them, washing out clothes in them, and it was just completely nasty."

PUBLIC WORKS Online
It turns out that Copepods may be more common than we would expect, especially
in water systems that are not filtered:
Copepods are sometimes found in the public mains water supply, especially systems where the water is not filtered, such as New York City and Boston, Massachusetts. This is not usually a problem in treated water supplies. In some tropical countries, such as Peru and Bangladesh, a correlation has been found between copepods and cholera in untreated water, because the cholera bacteria attach to the surfaces of planktonic animals. The larvae of the guinea worm must develop within a copepod's digestive tract before being transmitted to humans. The risk of infection with these diseases can be reduced by filtering out the copepods (and other matter), for example with a cloth filter...
...The matter of copepods in the water supply, however, has raised a problem for Jews who observe Kashrut in that copepods, being crustaceans, are not kosher, and are not small enough to be ignored as non-food microscopic organisms (since some specimens can be seen with the naked eye). The discovery of copepods in the New York water supply in the summer of 2004 in particular caused significant debate in rabbinical circles and caused many observant Jews to buy filters for their water.

- Chlorination is a water treatment that destroys disease-causing bacteria, nuisance bacteria, parasites and other organisms. Chlorination also removes soluble iron, manganese and hydrogen sulfide from water.
Disease-causing bacteria can infect humans and animals in several ways. Fecal waste from an infected host frequently carries organisms which cause diseases such as typhoid fever, paratyphoid fever, bacillary dysentary, infectious hepatitis and others. Disease-causing organisms are transmitted from host to host in many ways including through a contaminated water supply. Human and/or livestock populations concentrated together with improperly located or constructed wells may result in contamination of water supplies by sewage or fecal wastes. - Drinking Water: Lead and Drinking Water from Private Wells- Parasitic Pathways - Division of Parasitic Diseases

Cryptosporidiosis (KRIP-toe-spo-rid-ee-OH-sis) is a diarrheal disease. It is caused by parasites of the Cryptosporidium species (spp.). Both the disease and the parasite are commonly known as "crypto." Crypto can live in the intestine of humans and animals, and is passed in the stools. The parasite is protected by an outer shell, which allows it to live outside the body for long periods of time. It also makes it hard to be killed by chlorine disinfection. During the past two decades, crypto has become one of the most common causes of waterborne disease in humans in the United States. - Fluoride: Wonder drug or super poison | Natural Health Dentistry
- We've all seen it on TV a million times. This or that brand of toothpaste, made with fluoride! The wonder drug that's going to save our teeth from cavities! If you hear it enough growing up, especially as an impressionable youngster watching children's TV with its endless toothpaste commercials, you just might start to believe it.
What the commercials don't say is that fluoride was known in the early 1900s as an excellent rat poison. According to Robert Carleton, former scientist with the EPA, fluoride is more toxic than lead, and not quite as toxic as arsenic. It's a waste product of many heavy industries-derived from the production of pesticides, fertilizers, aluminum, iron, steel, copper, lead, uranium, brick, cement and glass, among others. - Health Dangers of Fluoride in Drinking Water on Fetuses and Infants | All 4 Natural Health News
- We have been told for years that having fluoride in our drinking water is good for us, in particular our teeth. Without fluoride, we are told, our teeth will decay and fall out.
How true are these assertions? And what about the health dangers of fluoride? The authorities barely speak about that. If you wish to take responsibility for the purity of your drinking water supplies and the health of your family, read the following article on the potential negative effects of fluoride, in particular on fetuses and infants.
Bottle Your Own Water
Studies have shown that bottled water is no better than tap water in developed countries. It certainly has a place, such as in undeveloped countries, or times of disaster, but instead of contributing to the waste of energy, and pollution of the overuse of bottled water you can very easily bottle your own water for personal use.Created with health and the environment in mind, these eco-friendly, high-quality stainless steel Klean Kanteen water bottles offer a great alternative to plastic and lined metal containers.
Klean Kanteen bottles are constructed from high quality sanitary grade 304 stainless steel which has a low nickel content, an excellent resistance to staining and rust, and will keep your beverages fresh, and sanitary.
These reusable bottles are lightweight, easy to clean, durable, and will not react with acidic beverages. The single walled containers can be placed on an open flame or heating surface, but are not recommended as containers for boiling hot liquids as the Kanteen has limited insulating properties.
Durable, sanitary, and non-reactive stainless steel is the material of choice among the food processing, dairy and brewery industries. The sanitary grade 304 stainless steel used in Klean Kanteen bottles also has a low nickel content, further reducing exposure to potentially irritating substances.
Easy to clean, the Klean Kanteen water bottles can be put in the dishwasher, or washed by hand with a brush and mild soap.
Klean Kanteens come in sizes to meet the needs of the entire family. The 12 and 18-ounce containers are designed specifically for kids. In bottles designed for small hands, the 12 and 18 ounce bottles are available with sippy cup lid adapters along with the other sports cap options, and weigh just 6 and 8 ounces respectively.
Adult sized 27 and 40 ounce Kanteens weigh just 8 and 11 ounces respectively, and are available with a choice polypropylene or steel caps. The openings are large enough to fit ice cubes, and the slim bottle design fits in most cup and bottle holders.
Klean Kanteen water bottles are available with a variety of sports caps made with non-leaching polypropylene #5 or stainless steel.
The sport, flat, and loop caps are interchangeable and fit all 12-, 18-, 27-, and 40-ounce stainless steel bottles securely.
The polypropylene #5 caps have no known leaching characteristics, and are softer on the teeth and easy to drink from. If you'd rather not have a plastic cap, a stainless steel screw-on lid is available.

MTBE Contamination Shows How Easy It Is To Lose Control Of Water Quality
In less than a month, the warning was changed to include "reduce the time spent in showers, ventilate bathrooms with exhaust windows or fans, give sponge baths to children who may swallow bath water, and reduce overall water use."
By October, the town's water supply was connected to a neighboring town's water system providing a fresh source of water to reduce the amount of contaminants in the overall system. At first the water district was still pumping it's main supply from contaminated wells, but eventually the local wells were closed, making the town dependent on outside sources until replacement wells could be dug.
MTBE is not classified as a human carcinogen at low exposure levels by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). However, exposure to large doses of MTBE carries significant non-cancer-related health risks. The effects of the prolonged presence of this alcohol derivative are not fully understood.

- The widespread use of methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) in reformulated gasoline and its impact on water supply systems throughout the country has raised serious concerns among water purveyors. MTBE was touted by the petroleum industry as the panacea for providing clean air. The promulgation of the 1990 Clean Air Act by the EPA resulted in the widespread use of MTBE as an additive in reformulated gasoline for reducing carbon monoxide emissions from motor vehicles. MTBE became the choice of gasoline companies based on its low cost and ease of production, thereby increasing reformulated gasoline profits. Industry representatives have been misleading the public to believe that the EPA mandated the specific use of the chemical.

We also had a contaminated water source issue in a nearby city that caused our water source to be rerouted. Scary stuff. You did a great job explaining solutions to water - something we easily take for granted.
