Is There a Right and Wrong Way to Clean a LCD Screen?
LCD Cleaners
So, Tell Me About the Rights and Wrongs, Please.
Let's start with the old habits that lead to the wrong way. In the old days when the screens were glass, everybody thought using window cleaner (Such as Windex.) This was acceptable, because it is far harder to damage the glass than the newer LCD soft screens. So in short, using window cleaner on LCD screens are a no-no. Not to say that you cannot use it, it may be to harsh on the screen's surface.
So why not just use a damp rag? A couple of reasons come to mind. The first is a large majority of this country (USA) uses well water. We all know that water directly from the earth has impurities such as lime, iron, calcium, etc. Rags are rough as well. Using this directly on your nice soft LCD screen is just asking for scratches, leaving permanent damage.
Okay, now that I bust all the bubbles, what is the right stuff to use? Glad you asked! It is always best to use a lint free cloth along with a commercial solution. They normally come in kits of all types. Below is a product that works out well in almost all cases. Just remember when cleaning a LCD or Plasma screen be sure to use little pressure and move in a circular motion. It does help if the screen is turned off so that you can see the smudges more clearly.
