Using Essential Oils for Cleaning
Cleaning with essential oils is a great green cleaning option for your home. You can avoid toxic commercial cleaning products, and most oils have a pleasant aromatherapy scent.
Many essential oils are unfriendly to the germs you want to get rid of, so you have a number of choices, including eucalyptus, lavender, lemon, pine, rosemary, and tea tree (also called melaleuca).
This lens gives you a variety of essential oil cleaning recipes to choose from. For more general aromatherapy and essential oils information, download my free aromatherapy ebook.

Before Cleaning with Essential Oils
Here are some important things to remember:
- When making essential oils cleaning sprays, use distilled or filtered water because the chlorine in tap water will deteriorate the oils over time. Label the bottle, so you know what it is later. Also, shake well before each use to thoroughly mix the water and oils.
- Baking soda and vinegar are old standbys for green cleaning, and you can add an essential oil of your choice to cut the odor of the vinegar.
- If you are unsure about using an essential oil blend on a surface, spot test first.
- Just as with other cleaning products, keep essential oil cleaning products away from young children and pets.
- For best results, use only pure, high-quality essential oils for cleaning.
