Cleaning Your Freezer - Step By Step Guide
Do you really need to clean your freezer regularly? Well we though the best idea was to speak to an expert, so we contacted Proclean Domestic Cleaning Glasgow for their advice. According to their spokeperson, most people will clean their freezer while cleaning their fridge, usually as part of a yearly spring clean. But what if you have a stand-alone freezer? They can develop that stale smell and if you don't get round to defrosting and cleaning them regularly, ice can build up on the seal, making it less effective and meaning the unit has to work harder to keep food frozen, costing you money on electricity bills.
So, first things first - remove all of the food, and keep it in the refrigerator. Unplug the freezer and allow to defrost naturally. If you need to speed up the process, you could always use a hairdryer or fan.
Once the freezer has been completely defrosted and any pools of water from melted ice has been dried up, all you need is some baking soda and warm water to wash out the interior. Wipe the inside dry with towels and use the soft brush attachment of your vacuum cleaner to clean the condenser coils at the back of the unit - be careful not to damage them!
Once this has been done you can switch your freezer back on and replace your foodstuffs. If your freezer has a drip pan remove it and clean out with baking soda and warm water as before, or with a mild detergent like Fairy Liquid.
To keep your newly cleaned freezer odour free your might want to consider placing some plastic trays sprinkled with baking soda at the foot of the freezer or else try activated charcoal - this may look a little odd sitting in your freezer but will get the job done of removing unwelcome smells.
