What You'll Learn
Many of my friends and family members have asked me about how to clean up their computer of viruses and spyware. Many times they will ask because they are getting annoying popups, even when not surfing the internet. After installing common and easy to obtain software programs and running scans, I will find their computer was completely infected with TONS of viruses and spyware. If you have a brand new computer or have recently reinstalled Windows and have not installed some form of anti-virus software, your computer can become infected very quickly without any notice. My article should show you how to easily get rid of any spyware and viruses on your computer.
The Basics
How To Begin
Getting rid of viruses and spyware should not be a long, drawn out process and there is TONS of software out there to choose from which will make this a very simple process. The main thing you have to do, is decide which software to go with, once you have the software installed, it is generally just a matter of hitting a scan button and waiting for the software to finish scanning your computer for known infections.
What Is On Your Computer?
Types of infections
There are many different types of infections that you can get on your computer. These include the easy to notice pop-up viruses, which will randomly pop up a browser window trying to get you to buy software, magazine subscriptions, sign up for a casino account, etc. Then there are is a wide array of viruses which will just run in the background, often without you even knowing they are there. These include trojans- viruses often spread by e-mail. You may recieve an e-mail with an attachment posing as a picture, but when opened it will install a small program on your computer which can allow hackers access to your computer for them to do as they please. There are also worms, which are generally spread through computer networks and although not always extremely harmful, some can delete or edit files, making your computer completely freeze or not even completely boot.
Then there is a browser hijakcer, which will change the homepage of your internet browser to a forced webpage, not allowing you to change it. While not always hamrful, these are generally quite frustrating as you often don't want the particular webpage to be your homepage.
There are more types of viruses, but this should cover the basics and most common ones you'll find.
