My Homage to Edmund Clerihew Bentley.

Who gave his name to the humourous poetic form.

My Homage to Edmund Clerihew Bentley.

E. C. Bentley (July 10, 1875 - March 30, 1956), was a popular English novelist and humorist of the early twentieth century, and the inventor of the clerihew, an irregular form of humorous verse on biographical topics. He died at the age of 80 in 1956.

The rules for writing a Clerihew are they must be non-metrically written in two couplets, the first of which is to be a proper name and that's it.
However, they should tell some biographical truth - metrical gracelessness is considered most deserving and held in high regard.

One of Bentley's Famous examples is:

Sir Humphrey Davy
Abominated gravy.
He lived in the odium
Of having discovered sodium.

You can bring this form right up to date ...

Britney Spears,
Has gone nuts it appears.
She shaved every hair from her head.
When most women would just dye it red.

Clerihews are a great way to introduce the subject of poetry to young children. The're fun and easy to write. Try it!
