Finding the work of local Cleveland Ohio artists

If you are traveling to Cleveland, Ohio for business or pleasure, you might be surprised to hear that Cleveland is a hotbed of local artists. My personal theory is that there are two reasons for that.

One reason is that the excellent Cleveland Institute of Art is here, and trains artists who fall in love with Cleveland, Ohio, and never leave. The second reason is that since we Clevelanders are all cooped up for three months during a cold and snowy winter, we are bound to create a lot of things including art.

Nevertheless, there are a lot of wonderful local Cleveland art galleries tucked into various corners of Cleveland and the suburbs around Cleveland. This article is an introduction to the best of them.

ArtCraft Studios

Artcraft Building, Superior Avenue

The Artcraft Building is located in an old warehouse building on Superior Avenue in downtown Cleveland. If you have time to browse, or can get appointments at the galleries located there, it is fascinating place to look through. Put on your hiking boots though because you will have to climb up and down a lot of stairs or ride a very old elevator to get from floor to floor.

Inside you will find ArtCraft Studios painting studio, Fuchs & Kasperek photography studio, and the really interesting ceramics of Mark Yasenchack, just to name a few.

Artefino Gallery

Artefino Cafe, Superior Avenue

Artefino Gallery and Cafe is found in the Tower Press Building which is also on Superior Avenue in downtown Cleveland. Not only can you browse the beautiful artwork there, featuring founding artist Hector Vega, but you can also get a great lunch, drink, or snack in this historic landmark building.

Banyan Tree

Professor Road, Tremont

In one of the up and coming areas of Cleveland, Tremont, is a unique boutique and gallery called the Banyan Tree. If you would like to shop interesting jewelry, clothing, and accessories, Banyan Tree is a good place to look. You can also visit many other small galleries in Tremont, as well as some excellent local restaurants there.

Brian Jones Gallery

Little Italy, Cleveland

One of my favorite galleries is the Brian Jones Gallery in Little Italy. Little Italy is on the eastern edge of Cleveland, right next to Case Western University, and University hospitals. The Brian Jones Gallery is full of original art by painter Brian Jones. Brian's art is full of color, bold brush strokes, and more color.

His work is unmistakable even when he changes styles, and even if you can't find room for it in your house, you should take a walk through the gallery, and refresh your mind with his work.

Corcoran Fine Arts

Larchmere Road, near Shaker Square, Cleveland

Corcoran Fine Arts gallery is full of some of the better known artists from the Cleveland area, including Viktor Schreckengost, and George Kocar, original art and selected prints. This gallery is located in another wonderful area of Cleveland called Larchmere.

The area is named after the street it is on, and it has several boutiques, galleries, an amazing bookstore, and great local restaurants. Larchmere is located adjacent to Shaker Square, only one block away, so you can visit both places the same day.

Glass Bubble Project

Vase from Glass Bubble Project ClevelandThe Glass Bubble Project, is a unique glass studio and gallery that offers glass blowing classes right in the city of Cleveland.

Glass Bubble also specializes in using recycled glass and metal to make functional art pieces, some of which are hanging in the Ritz-Carlton hotel and private homes throughout the country.

From their site:
"Our work is industrial and clunky, kind of like the way we see Cleveland -tough and durable. We spend as much time as we can scavenging through antique stores and scrap yards for unique objects ensuring that every piece is unique and impressive."
