What Do You Know About Cleveland, Ohio?

Cleveland, Ohio is my hometown, and I am a huge promoter of all things Cleveland. Cleveland is a great place to live, people here are friendly and down-to-earth, and there is a lot of really cool local history. Cleveland, Ohio is also one of the least expensive places to live in the United States.

Cleveland has a lot of interesting and quirky history, as well as a wonderful orchestra, art museum, and three major league sports teams. Not to mention being the home of rock and roll. How much cooler could we be?

This is an introduction to all things Cleveland including local Cleveland history books, Cleveland posters, Cleveland t-shirts, and more.

Cleveland Food Memories

Remember when food was local? Cleveland companies made it, and local people sold it and ran the restaurants where we ate it. Food makes powerful memories. This book makes a fantastic gift for any Clevelander or former Clevelander.

Cleveland, Ohio is a Green City

I am a huge proponent of becoming as green as possible. I am really proud to be in a city like Cleveland that is working so hard in that area.

There are so many places in the city that green is happening, and one of the coolest is a festival every summer called the Burning River Fest put on by the Great Lakes Brewing Company.

Great Lakes Brewing Company is one of the greenest companies in Cleveland, including its delivery truck which runs on used cooking oil.

Green City Blue Lake

Cleveland is one of the most Green cities in the U.S and getting greener daily!

Clevelanders Have a Lot to be Proud of

Over the Bridge by Viktor Schreckengost

I wasn't born in Cleveland, Ohio. I moved here at the ripe old age of 3 years old. That was when my father went from being a doctor in the Navy to private practice. When I was growing up in Cleveland, I pretty much took for granted all of the sports and culture the city had to offer. I didn't think much about the Great Lake to the north, Lake Erie because it was just always there.

But even so, I loved being here in Cleveland. And now as an adult that is even more true.

Cleveland is rich in both people and culture. Clevelanders are friendly people who work hard and play hard. Cleveland has a small town feel in a big city. It is not unusual to run into people you know at a business or social function. And people in Cleveland are energetic. There are a lot of people working to revitalize the downtown area and other parts of Cleveland.

Cleveland truly is the city of Superman. All of us have a bit of Superman in us as we go through our daily lives.

Boys of Steel: The Creators of Superman

Amazon Price: $8.73 (as of 02/13/2012)Buy Now

Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, two misfit teens in Depression-era Cleveland, were more like Clark Kent-meek, mild, and myopic-than his secret identity, Superman. Both boys escaped into the worlds of science fiction and pulp magazine adventure tales. Jerry wrote stories, and Joe illustrated them. In 1934, they created a superhero who was everything they were not. It was four more years before they convinced a publisher to take a chance on their Man of Steel in a new format-the comic book. The author includes a provocative afterword about Jerry and Joe's long struggle with DC Comics when they realized they had made a mistake in selling all rights to Superman for a mere $130!

Marc Tyler Nobleman's text captures the excitement of Jerry and Joe's triumph, and the energetic illustrations by Ross MacDonald, the author-artist of Another Perfect Day, are a perfect complement to the time, the place, and the two young visionaries.

Superman was born in Cleveland, Ohio not on Krypton as is told in his history. As he is truly a Clevelander, I felt I had to include him in this article about Cleveland.

Cleveland Ohio Sports Teams

Cleveland fans are the most loyal fans anywhere

If you are a Clevelander, you know who our sports teams are. Clevelanders never give up on their teams. No matter where you go in the city, there are people in the various team shirts, caps, and jerseys.

In my family, baseball was always the biggest sport. Even now, with my brother in Boston and my sister in LA, my entire family is always listening and following the Tribe. Although, I will admit basketball runs a close second.

Personally, I am involved in Cleveland's arts community. I am the owner of a unique gallery of local Cleveland artists called Lake Erie Artists Gallery.

Most of the books and the images in this lens can be found inside the gallery.

Lake Erie Artists Gallery started out as a cooperative about 7 years ago. Since then we have grown to a privately held company representing over 80 artists of all types. We have a brick and mortar store in Cleveland's historic neighborhood, Shaker Square, on the eastern border of the city of Cleveland near Cleveland Heights and Shaker Heights.

Cleveland Museum of Art

Cleveland has a world class art museum which has just reopened after major renovations. They are far from finished. The finish goal date is 2012.

Cleveland Museum of Art

It is a little messy right now, but they have reopened some of the oldest galleries that haven't been opened for a while. In each area, the artwork had to be put away then cleaned and brought back out and reassembled including full suits of armor.

Cleveland's Best Feature is it's. . .

Guardians of Transportation by Jim Ptacek

This montage of photographs was taken on the Carnegie Lorain Bridge that runs across the Cuyahoga River. Each guardian represents a different kind of transportation.

Okay, I know that I am biased, but I say that Cleveland's best feature is it culture--orchestra, art museum, galleries, rock n' roll history and more. But what do you think?

What do you think Cleveland's best feature is?

I'm going to have to agree about the West Side Market. I love that place! Never do manage to get my husband there when we're visiting though :(

I love Terminal Tower and Lake Erie, both majestic in their own way.

Deby says:

I love the old world feel of the Westside Market, I love to go down and shop go across the street to eat at one of the great local owned establishments or just get a Brat and eat while walking and shopping at some of the cool little shops.

Sports--Go Browns!

Victor Sexton says:

I had to leave Cleveland over 30 years ago and pageing down this website has brought up long forgotten memories. I use to see crossing the Carnegie Loraine Bridge was nothing more than part of the daily drudgery and I saw your pictures of the Guardians Of Transportation and I was overwelmed with the warm feeling you get when you first arrive back home after being gone a very long time. I remember sitting in the stadium watching Broadway Joe Namath throw against our Brownies, or going to the Colosieum to hear the Dr. Hook and The Medicine Show Band, remember the song Sylvia's Mother? But my favorite Cleveland feature was Garfields' Tomb in Forest Hills Park.
