What is Clicker Training for Dogs?
A dog-training clicker is a small thing you can hold in your hand, keep handy in a pocket, or wear on a chain around your neck. When your dog does what you ask it to, at the very moment it sits or whatever, you click the clicker. This sound tells the dog (after you do some pre-training so he understands) that that's what you wanted. Then you give the dog a reward, food or praise, but the neat thing is that the reward can be delayed from the time of the desired action.
You can chain together actions, for example, the dog can learn to go down, roll over, and stand back up in one series.
It's fun, quite simple, and effective. And it sure beats a lot of the older pain-based methods! Here I am training my sister's Boston Terrier to balance on her back legs. I wasn't planning to teach her that, but when she offered the behavior by chance, I began shaping for it, that is, rewarding the steps toward it.

Clicker Training Our Rottweiler
Starting at 6 months old, which is when we got her
I'm doing a lot of clicker training since acquiring a very sweet, very smart puppy. Lola was 6 months old when we got her and is a Rottweiler. I've never had one before and I'm very impressed with how quickly she learns!See the next module for the link to the Clicker Training part of my blog...

What a clicker looks like
This is the newest kind of clicker, and it's just about exactly this size (on my computer screen anyway). I just got up from my computer and went to the shelf in my bathroom where I keep dog clickers to compare one with the photo. The minute I had a clicker in my hand, my dog came charging across the room to see what was up. He couldn't believe I just sat down again without doing a thing with him. Sorry, LarryDog, a little later...There are older clickers that are rectangular and they work fine too, but I do like the nice feeling of this kind in my hands.
Clickers do tend to work better than just clicking your tongue. There's something about the crispness of the sound.
