Why More Vets Need to Advocate Clicker Training Puppies
Now before I get into too much trouble, I want to say that I think puppy vaccines are really important. I've seen A LOT of puppies suffer and die after being infected with the parvovirus. It's not pretty.
However, due to the staggering number of dogs relinquished to shelters every year, behavior is definitely the #1 factor affecting the well-being of adult dogs. If we spent a little more time educating puppy parents on the importance of proper training, maybe there would be a lot less unwanted pets in this world.

Clicker Training Puppies FAQS
How old does my puppy have to be before I start clicker training? The sooner the better. Unlike traditional training methods that use correction-based techniques you can't physically harm your puppy with clicker training.
Shouldn't my puppy obey simply to make me happy? Puppies certainly like to have fun and get a lot of satisfaction from seeing their parents laugh and smile. However, trainers using force and correction often claim that the dog is working to please his master when in reality the dog is working simply to avoid punishment. How do you train a killer whale? Hint: not with a leash or a choke collar.
Will I always have to carry around a clicker and treats? The clicker and treats are used only to teach the desired behavior. Once the behavior is learned and a signal (word or gesture) is attached to the behavior both the clicker and treats can be faded away.

Before You Start Clicker Training Puppies
There's a few things you need to know . . .
1. Always click FIRST, then treat. You don't need to keep the food in front of the puppy to lure or guide him. The puppy will remember what he was doing WHEN HE HEARD the click, not WHEN THE TREAT ARRIVES.
2. Think of the clicker like a camera. You want to take a picture of your puppy doing exactly what you want so you can show it to him later. Always click the MOMENT the behavior is happening. Remember, the food comes later.
3. For the love of all creatures great and small--ONLY CLICK ONCE.
4. Don't use the clicker to get your puppy's attention. Yes, it will certainly work if you give it a try. However, at the same time you'll also diminish the clicker's power as a powerful training tool.
