Climbing Ropes

Rope Climbing is a simple exercise but it is one of the very best exercises you can do for building upper-body strength.

In fact, climbing ropes have been discovered at several ancient burial sites making them the oldest strength training tool.

If you want to get started in climbing ropes, this lens will teach you some things you will need to know beforehand:

In the first part of this article we will explain the different types of ropes - you have two different types of ropes, one that can be used outside or inside(polyplus,) or manila (which can be used inside only.

Indoor Vs. Outdoor Climbing Ropes 

  • MANILA INDOOR CLIMBING ROPES


  • Any rope can be used to pull tugboats, but for climbing purposes, you will want the highest quality manila rope you can find.

    -- The reasons for this are very simple:

    As you climb, you want to be sure your rope will remain steady and secure every time. This will be no problem with high quality manila but you'll take your chances with anything else.

    Secondly, quality manila reduces the liklihood of "rope splinters" and you sure don't want to mess with those.

    Functional Hand Strength featurs the highest quality manila climbing ropes in the business: pure "Grade A" 1-1/2" or 2" diameter 3-strand manila fiber.

    Another important factor with any climbing ropes is how it's attached. Needless to say, an unexpected fall from any high is never a good thing, which is why our climbing ropes come with a specially designed steel eye-hooks on one end.

    This eye-hook makes installation literally a snap, and is the safest and most secure attachment option you can use. If you have ever tried to tie a 1-1/2" thick rope in a secure knot you know why uyour attachment hardware is so important.

    These natural manila fiber ropes absorb perspiration for the best grip and are extremely durable.The other end comes wrapped in a "polyboot" designed to prevent fraying and unraveling thus significantly extending the life of your rope under heavy use.

    For those who would like to keep their ropes outside, we also offer polyplus ropes that are beneficial for those who would like to climb outside and benefit from the training that way.

  • POLYPLUS OUTDOOR CLIMBING ROPES

  • Our outdoor ropes, (also known as polyplus ropes) are created from a duarable polyester outside, and a lightweight synthetic core.

    This material has the best moisture and UV ray resistant properties of any ropes out there, and that means that they are going to last longer than any other option.

    These types of ropes are helpful because they do not create or develop splinters like a manila rope will, and will not rot like a manila rope will if they are left out open to the environment.

    The rope has a soft, cottony feal and is easy on your hands and in the end, as the rope gets used it gets tufted, which will make it easier to climb.

    One of the main differences between outdoor and indoor ropes is the attachment mechanism. Unlike the manila ropes which feature a steel clamp with a welded loop, the attachment mechanism on these Polyplus Outdoor Climbing Ropes are woven directly into the rope itself via a galvanized steel eye "thimble."

    The steel eye provides the absolute best protection in terms of security and durability when you are climbing.

    How to Choose a Climbing Rope Length 

    Our Climbing Ropes come in five standard lengths: 15, 18, 20, 22 and 24 feet.

    However, we can do any possible length you would need.

    The traditional rule of thumb for choosing climbing ropes length is that is should be long enough so that approximately 4 feet of slack rope is on the floor.

    This extra rope is used for spotting purposes if need be, and it also allows a climber to get on anf off the rope in a more efficient fashion.

    To find the proper length of climbing rope you will need for your rope, please measure the distance from the floor to overhead girder or attachment point and add 3 1/2 inches (this does not take into consideration beam clamps or other mounting hardware.)

    For pulling or dragging purposes, 50 or more feet is generally recommended (although again, we can do any length you need.)

    If you would simply like to attach your rope to a pulley or hang your rope for exercises such as pullups, laybacks or hanging leg raises, generally a 15-foot will suffice and is our most popular length.
