Clinical Research

Clinical research is used to determine the safety and efficacy of medicines and devices & equipment used in medicine. It is a way to show that a drug or equipment are safe for use in humans. The role of a clinical research associate or CRA, also known as a Monitor is to supervise the conduct and progress of a clinical trial.

A clinical research or trial is typically conducted by doctors at a hospital or clinic. The job of a CRA is to monitor the beginning, progress and conduct of clinical trials and ensure the integrity of data that is being collected.

CRA responsibilities include making certain that the physician follows good clinical practices, verifying the documentation involved in the consent by subjects of the study and ensuring that all the adverse experiences are documented.

Medical research has two main categories - clinical trials and clinical research (carried out to evolve new treatments). There is a lot of training associated with the clinical research associate. Apart from theory, there will be hands-on practical training also. Online training is given for the theory portions and practical training is given at different locations to suit student convenience.

For the online training, text books are provided to the students to match the online content. The books have all the diagrams, flow charts and tables relating to the online matter to assist student comprehension.

With an online course, trainees have the advantage of learning at their own pace. The estimated completion time for the course varies from 70 to 100 hours. Once the student completes the course he should be able to trace the path of a medicine or device from discovery to marketing approval, to identify GCP (Good Clinical Practices) obligations to protect subject rights, describe conditions at clinical trials and detect and resolve GCP deficiencies.

The course curriculum will normally include FDA rules and regulations, GCP, medical research overview, Clinical trial development and management and monitoring obligations and methods used.

To ensure effectiveness in training, tests are conducted and only after passing with a minimum percentage, the student is declared ready for practical session. In the hands on portion, students are exposed to different therapy areas, monitoring plans, Case report Forms, and several standard operating procedure requirements.

The hands on typically happens for two weeks and requires them to undertake a study with subjects of and investigator files helping them understand GCP issues better. Go to our Clinical research information website to learn more about effective and valuable CRA training.

Learn How

Clinical research is one of the most important and upcoming fields in the area of medical science. Medicines have the power to heal and save lives as well. There is so much development taking place in the world of medicine that the pace is indeed dizzying and mind boggling. While one cannot take away from the significance of medicine, one must realize that without adequate and appropriate clinical research, it would be impossible to check and test the efficacy as well as safety of using these complex compounds and molecules that go into formulating these drugs and formulations. A clinical research associate is someone who is closely linked to the practice of the all important field of clinical research.

Clinical research associate helps in conducting various processes to ensure that drugs are correctly tested before they are ever released into the open market, with the potential to impact millions of people, for good or for bad, for life or for death. There are hence very stringent and strict regulations that govern the whole realm of clinical research so as to be absolutely without a shred that the drug indeed performs the task that it is purported or touted to perform and that too with great consistence. These tests are performed on animals, as well as healthy and diseased humans in order to ascertain the veracity and efficacy of the drugs. As far as the responsibilities of a research associate are concerned they are quite multifarious.

A clinical research associate is supposed to assist in conducting and documenting various aspects of the laboratory as well as actual tests that are conducted as part of this research. There are various schedules and test programs that are meticulously adhered to and carefully documented in terms of test results, side reactions or after effects of drugs. A lot of the responsibilities also deal with interacting with doctors, scientists, research bodies, ethical and regulatory agencies and the government or the FDA which are key stakeholders in clinical research. The pharmaceutical industry is a multi-billion dollar industry that commands respect and demands close attention too, which is undeniably quite justified too.

Learn all about Medical Research

In a world that is burgeoning with people and within the context of global health scares that are sweeping the world, medical research plays a very important role in ensuring that the world of medicine is well regulated and within acceptable limits of safety for the end beneficiary of the results of medical science. Medical science and research attracts billions of dollars of investment each year and it certainly bears mention that the effects including potential benefits and hazards posed by it are indeed far reaching.

Medical research consists of different streams that deal with aspects of basic and applied research as well as translational research. Basic research deals with the fundamental research in science that concerns itself with the basic principles that could lead to transformations and tectonic shifts in the way medical science progresses. However, this takes time and could in fact span over many decades. If we take into consideration applied research, this takes into account the already established and proven medical research principles to come up with inventions, explorations and discoveries that can advance the cause of medical science. For example, a new form of cataract operations would come under the domain of applied research.

The third aspect of medical research is called translational research that attempts to bring about some synergy and commonality between basic and applied research. Advanced universities and medical laboratories conduct basic research typically, where the polytechnics and medical companies and pharmaceutical companies spearhead applied research, which is more directly linked to the end user. Translational research as the name implies, seeks to bridge this deep divide between basic and applied medical research, so as to bring about quicker translations between the fundamental concepts of basic research and the pragmatic applications and solutions presented by applied science, thereby reducing cycle or 'to market' timelines for various path breaking medical products and services.
