Clint Eastwood: Be Still My 11 Year Old Heart!

And today's heart too, but for different reasons.

The year was 1959 and and 11 year old Iowa girl found her first heartthrob. It happened when real cowboy show, Rawhide first aired on television. If any of you remember there were no VCS's (remember those?) no instant repeats, no syndication. TV shows came on once in the season and then once as a rerun in the summer. If you missed a show, you missed it.

So when I first saw a young cowhand, Rowdy Yates, a member of the cattle train, driving the herds to market, week after week, with lots of drama, I knew that I had to be home at 7 o'clock each and every Friday night.

And I never missed one. Not one. I vividly see myself gunning my bicylce because I had forgotten the time and might not make it home until 7:05. I might miss a second of my time with the young Rowdy Yates. I was bitter when the episode seemed to short change him and elated when one focused on him.

Then one day Clint Eastwood broke my heart! Yes, he did. The TV Guide had a cover picture of him. Wow. I actually used my own money to buy it. I counted out the nickels and, not able to wait to get home, I sat on the curb to read all about him. That's when I discovered that he was 29 years old! Say it ain't so, Joe! Not only that, but he was glad! He didn't like being a teenager and was looking forward to 30! How could he do this to me?

It was never quite the same again. Well, not for many years.

Three reasons to love Clint Eastwood

1. His body of work is incredible. Especially the movies of the last few years, Million Dollar Baby and Gran Torino are amazing stories in which he acted, directed and did just about everything. He has won five Oscars and multiple other awards.

2. He is a smart business man. After his TV debut ended, instead of going the way of a lot of young, unemployed TV cowboys, he went to Italy and made a series of Spaghetti Westerns. He kept himself employed and acting, and actually made a couple of good movies, including The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.

3. He in a man of his own principles. I am not really thrilled with many of his political beliefs, but I do admire that he is true to them. Eastwood is a libertarian who just wants to be left alone. He is multi-married and has more kids than married mothers. However, he also does not bother other people. He lives and let lives.

Did I mention that he is gorgeous. Today at one year shy of 80 he looks very much the old man. But a very good looking old man. In another 20 years, I would be all over him!

I can remember, in his hey day, he came to Britain. He was to appear on "Sunday Night At The London Palladium." This was the British version of Ed Sullivan. My mum couldn't wait.

Yes, as a child, I too, had a big crush on Clint Eastwood. Since his western days, he has done a few movies I didn't really care for, but overall, I think he is a great actor and yes, a real cutie :)

Excellent lens Margo. I remember Clint in Rawhide - just! I was 5 in 1959, but it aired in England as well. Everything in those days for young boys was Cowboys And Indians, so Rawhide and Wagon Train were my favorite shows, along with Rin Tin Tin of course. Lensrolled bak to my Clint Eastwood Movies And Collectibles lens, and Blessed.
